Practical Magic is getting a sequel, decades after the first film premiered in 1998. Today, Warner Bros. confirmed the news on social media that Practical Magic 2 is in development and “coming soon.”

Variety had a few more details, including confirmation that stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in talks to reprise their roles as the magically inclined Owens sisters, and that Akiva Goldsman will be penning the script.

In the first movie, which is based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, the Owens sisters try to cover up the killing of an abusive ex-boyfriend of Kidman’s character. Magical hijinks ensue as the two try to avoid getting arrested for murder and work to break the family curse that prevents any Owens woman from finding (and keeping) love.

We don’t have any details about the plot for the sequel, including whether it will be based on another of Hoffman’s books in the series or an entirely new story. We also don’t know if any other characters from the original will return beyond Kidman and Bullock, though I sure do hope that at least Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will be back as well.

This isn’t the first Practical Magic project in the works in recent history. Back in 2019, HBO Max was mulling over developing a prequel television series called Rules of Magic, which was based on another one of Hoffman’s books.

That series sadly never made its way into full production, but here’s to hoping that this sequel will magic its way into theaters sooner rather than later. icon-paragraph-end
