During San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, the cast of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks took to the stage in Hall H to share a trailer for the show’s fifth and final season. And even though the series is facing its final episodes, the clip makes clear that Lower Decks’ irreverence for making deep Trek cuts for laughs remains strong.

In this case, the deep cut is a trailer for 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The setup for both trailers is the same, something that is sure to tickle many a Trek fan’s fancy.

The trailer also teases many things mentioned in the synopsis for the fifth and final season of Lower Decks:

In season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes” – subspace rifts which are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all: their own career aspirations. This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

Season Five of Lower Decks premieres on Paramount+ with two episodes on October 24, 2024.  Following the premiere, new episodes of the ten-episode season will drop every Thursday leading up to the series finale on Thursday, December 19.
