23 Things We Learned from Rafe Judkins’ Wheel of Time Instagram Q&A

As the coronavirus pandemic shuts down TV productions across the globe, the cast and crew of Amazon’s The Wheel of Time have been flown out of Prague, where they had been hard at work filming season 1 of the forthcoming Robert Jordan adaptation.

But this doesn’t mean production has halted completely. Instead, it looks like various departments (including the now-virtual Writer’s Room and VFX) are trying to do as much as they can while in self-isolation. Over the weekend, showrunner Rafe Judkins did a Q&A over his Instagram Stories, where he answered fan-submitted questions, gave an update on production, and dangled a few juicy morsels about the show.  Here’s everything we learned!

Production

  • Judkins says post-production and filming is done simultaneously. Pre-COVID-19, he was “prepping 2 episodes, shooting 2 episodes, in post on 4 episodes and writing Season 2 simultaneously.” Currently, he’s still working on VFX and the season 2 writers’ room remotely.
  • As a consulting producer, Wheel of Time editor Harriet McDougal (who is also the wife of Robert Jordan) has been on-set in Prague, reads all the scripts, and sends Judkins notes. The showrunner says “She and Maria [Simons, Team Jordan’s editorial assistant] are hugely helpful for maintaining the truth of the series and always keep me honest when it comes to things that change too much.”
  • Author Brandon Sanderson “reads all the scripts and gives notes,” and gave some pre-filming advice when he was in Prague.
  • In terms of the CGI-to-practical ratio, they’re trying to do “as much in-camera as [they] possibly can.”
  • The hardest thing about production is the “physicality,” since the characters visit over 20 villages and cities in the books. “To try to do that is physically impossible for the show,” wrote Judkins, “so most of the work we do in the room is geographical, figuring out how to condense the story and move it through places we can physically create.” Judkins later specified that this applied somewhat to the sequence where Rand and Mat are inn-hopping on the Caemlyn Road.
  • The cast-members are reportedly nailing the Old Tongue.
  • When asked if he’s had to make any “painful” cuts to scenes or characters, Judkins simply said “Yes.”
  • They have a “for real sword master” on the show who “walks into every room and tests out everything as a weapon.”
  • The horse actors are apparently great and “downright sexy,” especially Mandarb and Aldieb. However, they’ve already “had to have two Belas. It turns out a horse for riding on film is not the same as a horse for pulling a cart and SHE MUST DO BOTH.”
  • Fans may want to keep an eye out for more casting announcements, but a trailer is still a long ways off.

What We’ll See On-Screen

  • Min, Elayne, and Aviendha will NOT be merged into one character. “I’m not going to combine huge characters like that,” Judkins added. “Maybe sometimes a minor character folded into a major one to make better use of our cast but nothing nutso.” As for whether Min and Elayne will show up in season 1, Judkins replied “TWWaTWW,” which is short for “The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills” and appears to be Judkin’s version of Robert Jordan’s famous non-answer “RAFO” (Read And Find Out).
  • In another post, however, Judkins confirmed that Min is in season 1.
  • Any original characters created for the show are “inspired by characters in the books or a number of characters combined.”
  • Judkins says he’s “been giving a bunch of VFX folks long diatribes about channeling, weaves, threads, earth vs. air, etc and the early stuff has started coming in. It looks FUCKING AWESOME. I screamed when Rosamund started channeling.”
  • An iconic on-screen moment that stood out for him was Rand and Tam walking through the Westwood.
  • There will be one Aiel who shows up in season 1, and “the one you see will shock you.”
  • Judkins says he’s “trying to get tall folks” to portray the Aiel, but he’s “less concerned with height and more concerned with acting ability.”
  • You will hear the phrase “the Eye of the World” in season 1, although Judkins did not confirm or deny whether we’ll see The Eye of the World‘s prologue on-screen.
  • His favorite set so far has been Fal Dara and his favorite prop is the Great Serpent Ring.
  • He has not cut Narg the Trolloc.
  • Loial will be portrayed as an Ogier, not a human.
  • “I genuinely think we are cutting less than most people think. When I see people ask questions like, ‘are you cutting Min?’ It blows my mind. I don’t know how you do an adaptation without some of these characters. I think it’ll be more of the smaller stories you’ll miss. We can’t have Rand and May travel to many many inns on their travels across the countryside for instance. It’s just not producible. So that will be more of what you miss I think, and the books always exist to read for that :).”
  • The show is intended to be understandable for viewers who have not read the books.

You can view the full Q&A yourself over on Judkins’ account, or on Facebook, where the JordanCon account screenshotted everything for posterity.

Amazon had yet to announce a premiere date for The Wheel of Time pre-coronavirus. However, Balance interview with Rosamund Pike published in early March (although not the actress herself) mentioned a 2021 release date. Currently, there’s no word on when the series may debut.

The idea of combinging Rand’s harem into one is kind of funny, but glad they aren’t doing it, especially as all 3 play such different/important roles. Really looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.

The channeling, omen viewing, Aiel spearmaiden daughter heir of Andor? She’s tomboyish, fusymsy, regal, and savage with a spear.

I am still baffled as to why Rafe Judkins was chosen as the WoT showrunner. Based on what? Was he really the BEST choice for the job? Not sure how that happened.

If anything gets past Harriet, her assistant, and Brandon, that will be quite the accomplishment and a story very worth telling.  I bet they are also consulting the Wiki as it is extensive.

Few assumptions and inaccuracies I feel the need to point out:

You will hear the phrase “the Eye of the World” in season 1

He was asked “Will we see the prologue from the Eye of the World on screen in season 1” and responded with “You will hear that phrase.” What you wrote is merely an assumption. We don’t know what phrase he was referring to. He could very well have meant “the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills” or “Ilyena!” or any number of things.

In another post, however, Judkins confirmed that Min is in season 1.

He did no such thing. When asked “Blink twice if Min is in season 1” Rafe responded with two winking emoji. That is not a confirmation.

Now, I have no doubt Min will appear, and no doubt they will say the words “the Eye of the World” in the series, and I have no issue with assumptions – but when you have a platform people turn to for information, you have a responsibility to label your assumptions clearly, such that they are distinct from content with a factual basis. Otherwise you’re just spreading misinformation.

I know many a horse who are fantastic for riding, who pull carts, and who have also been in movies, so all three boxes ticked. But understandable that it may not always be that simple and you might need several :)

Also, usually trying not to nitpick, but this typo just seemed funny – it is now Rand and May traveling many inns, not him and Mat? Poor Mat, cast aside for a fourth girl :)

Regarding the info and news, that is wonderful and made me a lot more confident about what the show will be like. I cannot wait! I hope everyone involved will stay healthy and safe (and not just for the show’s sake, obviously).

-There will be one Aiel who shows up in season 1, and “the one you see will shock you.”

Best guess is Janduin and/or Tigrain, which would be sweet.  This also suggests that season one WON’T have much if any of TGH, since there IIRC are several Aiel in it, and they wouldn’t be terribly shocking.

-You will hear the phrase “the Eye of the World” in season 1, although Judkins did not confirm or deny whether we’ll see The Eye of the World‘s prologue on-screen.

Yeah, that’s not even close to what he said, and I have no idea why you’d think the two are related in any way.

I assumed ‘you will hear the phrase’ something like the catechism at the start of each book.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose <from somewhere>. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

Though that’s a bit wordy, so maybe it’ll be curtailed/paraphrased, and of course I could be wrong.

@7 There are four Aiel in two encounters in book 2: Mat/Perrin/the Shienarans meet one while searching for the Horn, and the whole party meets a few together at a stedding right before they go to Toman Head. Either encounter could easily be trimmed out even if they cover that much of the book, but I think it would make sense for them to cut the random folks and insert someone we’ll need to know better later (Aviendha, Gaul, maybe even Rhuarc) as the sole Aiel they meet at some point, so we can have the “oh wow Rand really does look like an Aiel” moment for the lads present and establish a character/face/actor for later seasons.

For myself, I’m really glad they’re taking the visual effects of the weaves seriously. Finding a balance between dramatic and cheesy is going to be the hardest part of that endeavour.

: Team Jordan had the following to say about Rafe:

Harriet is delighted that Rafe Judkins will be showrunner and lead writer of the series. As with the selection of Brandon Sanderson to finish the book series, Harriet found in Rafe a young artist with an abundance of talent and an abiding love for the series, having been reading the books since childhood. We have been assured that Rafe will have creative control over the television production, and he seems eager to consult with Harriet throughout the process. We wish Rafe the best, and look forward to a long and successful association with him.

I hate that this virus is shutting down production but I understand. I have waited this long to watch this series, I can wait awhile longer.

@@@@@#3 cruxish

Rafe is the one who pitched it to Sony/Amazon.  He wasn’t chosen by anyone.  He chose to pursue this.  The fact that he 1, persuaded Sony/Amazon to invest in the series, and 2, Harriet and team Jordan seem to really like him, make him the most capable to do this.

What is it about him you don’t have confidence in?  Just curious.

Of course there will be an Aiel in season one, you wool head.  The only one who can’t tell he is an Aiel is the most important one.

@14 Regarding Rafe Judkins, it can be hard for some of us to take him seriously as a show runner when:

– his big break was being a contestant on Survivor

– he’s never run a show before

– the show he was most influential over was “Chuck”

On the other hand, it really sounds like things are going well. Simply because he took a strange path to this role doesn’t mean Rafe doesn’t take it seriously or that he’s not capable.
