Last year, A24 released a first look at its upcoming adaptation of the Arthurian story Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Green Knight, and its had us salivating for it ever since.
The COVID-19 pandemic scuttled the film’s intended release, but now it looks as though we won’t have to wait too much longer. A24 released a new trailer for the project, as well as a release date: July 30th.
David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon) directed the film, which stars Dev Patel (Chappie), Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), and Joel Edgerton (Attack of the Clones, Bright). It promises a more horrific and surreal take on the story: The trailer shows off a challenge by the Green Knight, which is met by Gawain (played by Patel). Gawain manages to cut off the giant knight’s head, but he escapes with it in his arm, saying that they’ll meet again in a year.
Gawain sets off to find the knight and kill him, and that’s where things get really fantastical—giants roam the landscape as he deals with bandits and partners up with a talking fox. The whole thing looks like it’s astoundingly shot, with beautiful visuals.
The film’s set to hit theaters this summer—as opposed to the streaming service route that some films have gone—and hopefully, it will be safe to visit theaters by July.
