If you’re a fan of the Outlander television adaptation, you’re well-familiar with the show’s numerous renditions of its theme song. The seventh and penultimate season, set to premiere on this summer, will see another version of “The Skye Boat Song,” and this time it’s sung by none other than Grammy award winner, Sinead O’Connor.
“We are honored to have Sinead O’Connor performing ‘The Skye Boat Song,’” Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said in a statement. “Her rendition is, for me, a reminder of all that’s beautiful about Outlander. She is talented beyond measure. Hers is a voice of the ages—one which pierces heart and soul—and embodies the spirit of the show.”
The song, which you can hear in the video above, is accompanied by shots that hint what’s to come in the upcoming episodes. One of those sequences includes fighting that looks like it’s part of the American Revolution, something that has been long teased in the last few seasons but also something we haven’t seen much of on-screen.
When we last left Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe)—the show’s two lovers from different times who face insurmountable hardships together over the decades—Claire was being sent to hang for allegedly killing a young woman who (falsely) claimed she was having an affair with Jamie. The season six finale was quite unsatisfying, and I can only hope that season seven gives us some closure to the events past. At the very least we’ll get more episodes this summer—an impressive sixteen compared to the eight we got in season six.
We’ll also see some new faces in season seven, including Charles Vandervaart as “William Ransom,” Izzy Meikle-Small as “Rachel Hunter” and Joey Phillips as “Denzell Hunter.” They’ll be joining Balfe and Heughan as well as returning cast members Sophie Skelton (“Brianna MacKenzie”), Richard Rankin (“Roger MacKenzie”), John Bell (“Young Ian”), David Berry (“Lord John Grey”), Caitlin O’Ryan (“Lizzie Beardsley”), and Paul Gorman (“Josiah” and “Keziah Beardsley”).
The seventh season of Outlander will premiere on Starz sometime this summer. We also have this poster for the upcoming episodes to tide us over until then.
