Our prayers have been answered! Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm, something no one could have predicted. Or maybe they could—after all, Jurassic World 2 could use some familiar faces in addition to returning heroes Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard).
The last time we saw Dr. Malcolm was in the 1997 sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, so he’s probably got more than one thought about the success and subsequent shitshow that was Jurassic World the theme park. We don’t know much about the sequel, though screenwriter Colin Trevorrow said that it’s going to be less about dinosaurs chasing people around on an island and more about animal rights. No doubt everyone’s favorite rock star mathematician is here to poke holes in dinosaur theories, spout snarky commentary as the dinosaurs inevitably try to eat people, and lose a few buttons along the way.
Life will find a way yet again when Jurassic World 2 comes to theaters June 22, 2018.
My interest in this film just went from 0 to Must Watch.
Agreed with Scavenger Monk. Yes please. I even forgave the hot mess that was Independence Day 2 because I got to see Jeff in it.
For the record, “dinosaurs chasing people” is pretty much the entire reason I keep watching these movies.
Hollywood, like life, finds a way.
This totally makes my day. :D
Oh, yes…
I haven’t seen Jurassic World (will possibly rent it at some point) but as much as I love Jeff Goldblum, this kind of gives me pause: “it’s going to be less about dinosaurs chasing people around on an island and more about animal rights”. I mean, I hate to dump on somebody for trying to go a little deeper but I also kind of feel that for most people…’dinosaurs chasing people’ is mostly the draw. I mean, you can do both, right?
I was pleased to read that the movie is “going to be less about dinosaurs chasing people around on an island and more about animal rights.” Thank goodness someone has finally come along who realizes that we don’t go to dinosaur movies for a bit of cutting-edge special effects and brainless escapism, but to have a director climb up on a soapbox and preach a social message at us. Because we can’t get enough of that in movies that don’t feature dinosaurs. Perhaps the screenwriters of upcoming Marvel movies will follow Trevorrow’s clever approach and make their movies less about superheroes pummelling bad guys and more about things like flossing and always using your turn signal.
Talking to a colleague about this and we basically just want dinosaurs chasing people. And, ideally, eating more people. My 11 year old is down with this as well. But Jeff Goldblum is always a good addition, plus the original kids please.
Speaking of the original kids — I had no idea that Tim had gone on to play PFC Sledge in HBO’s The Pacific! (In addition to many other things.) Lex apparently isn’t in the business anymore, but perhaps she could be persuaded …
@7 – Lisamarie: It’s just one of those things they say to make their movies sound more interesting.
Also, calling it: JW2 will have no dinosaurs whatsoever, but be a taut courtroom drama with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard on trial for gross negligence, with Jeff Goldblum appearing as an expert witness for, well, one side or the other.
I can’t believe how many of you are happy with just “dinos chasing people”. To me, that describes the Jurassic Park sequels and they didn’t hold up anywhere near as well as the first movie, which does have some compelling themes. Sure the “should we do it just because we can” is kind of a Westworld retread, but I think the first movie also brings up things like:
– you can never predict the behaviour of complex (chaotic!) systems
– “life will find a way”
– is spectacle or commerce enough of a reason to mess with Life?
– don’t assume everything in the past was dumber or less capable than the present
and maybe more that I’m missing since I haven’t seen the movie since it came out.
