Star Wars cosplay is classic and limitless, with fans adhering to original designs or creating their own variations, bunny suit, 1920s’ style, crossover, or otherwise. But who doesn’t love a high-fashion twist on a sci-fi classic?
The Star Wars Barbies release by Mattel and Disney has reimagined the aesthetics of a few iconic Star Wars characters, serving some intergalactic realness.
Leia, Darth Vader, and R2-D2 get the runway treatment with new silhouettes based on their classic outfits and designs. And these looks are perfect for cosplay!
R2-D2’s humanized design is perfectly cyberpunk, and a combination of high-tech fabrics and shiny spandex would be great for recreating those shapes and textures.
Leia’s iconic princess gown gets a sexy upgrade with a more structured skirt and thigh-high leg slit, in what is maybe a nod to the pulp-inspired posters for the original film. It also reminds me of Anastasia’s ballgown design—just look at those sleeves! Her belt gets a sturdier design, too; I bet some skilled cosplayer will make a replica out of hammered metal.
Lastly, Darth Vader. Darth Vader’s look is my favorite. It’s like Edna Mode on steroids. The bob, the patent leather, the cape. THE CAPE. Imagine being enveloped in the soft plush velvet of deepest darkest night. The cape alone is worth the frustration of cosplay.
If you could cosplay any of these looks, which one would you choose?
