It’s official! Jeffrey Wright is our new Commissioner Gordon. On Tuesday evening, The Batman director Matt Reeves tweeted out a GIF of Wright along with the caption “Tweet! #Gordon,” plus a bat emoji.

Previously, it was reported that Wright was “in talks” to play Commissioner Gordon alongside Jonah Hill as an unspecified villain. Hill ended up turning down the role, and Paul Dano was announced as The Riddler instead.
Rounding out the cast is Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, reportedly. While this bit of casting news has yet to be officially confirmed, Reeves did tweet a GIF of the actress saying “Hello.” (He just, you know, didn’t write “#Catwoman”.) And Robert Pattinson, of course, will be playing Bruce Wayne/Batman (with a Willem Dafoe-inspired voice, no less).

This has me thinking.
Is it time for a Batman movie where Bruce Wayne/Batman is played by a POC? We’ve had Harvey Dent, Commissioner Gordon, and Selina Kyle. Doctor Who now stars Jodie Whittaker. Nick Fury and Idris Elba were fantastic in the MCU.
Maybe what the DC movies really need is to enter the 21st century?
*shrug* We’ll see.
I’d rather see a Superman of Colour – it makes perfect sense for Clark ‘Sunshine’ Kent to be dark skinned, given that his powers are explicitly linked to old Sol (and Black Superman has been a recurring Special Guest Hero in comics for more than long enough to deserve a chance to fly high on the Silver Screen).
As for Mr Wright’s casting, I’m glad to see a suitably talented actor cast in the role, but withhold final judgement until we can confirm he has Strong Moustache Game (as is only right and proper for a Gordon); a brief browse has revealed no conclusive proof, alas!
I do find it deeply amusing that Mr Pattinson will be modelling the Bat-voice on Mr Willem Dafoe; it’s not something that would have occurred to me, but it makes a good deal of sense when one considers it. (-:
So something like this?:

Hmmm … hopefully he’s upped his Moustache Game since that particular feature!
