Back in September, Warner Bros. revealed that it’s spinning off Peacemaker, John Cena’s character from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad into his own series.

It’s part of a strategy on the part of the studio to build up its library of original content for its streaming service, HBO Max, and it looks as though it’s moving along—a number of actors have joined the cast in the last couple of months, and we now know when it’ll begin streaming: January 2022.

The series will follow Cena’s character, Christopher Smith/the Peacemaker, a superhero who believes in peace at all costs—no matter how many people he has to kill. The character will appear in The Suicide Squad, and Cena will reprise the role in the eight-episode series.

Back in November, HBO Max announced the show’s first four cast members: Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Chris Conrad (Perpetual Grace, LTD.), Jennifer Holland (The Suicide Squad, Brightburn), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2). They’ll respectively portray Leota Adebayo (a woman with ties to Smith/Peacemaker), Agent Emilia Harcourt (an NSA agent assigned to oversee Task Force X), Vigilante/Adrian Chase (a former DA who becomes The Vigilante after his family is killed by the mob) and Smith’s racist father, Auggie Smith.

In December, HBO Max added an additional four actors: Annie Chang (Shades of Blue), Christopher Heyerdahl (Togo), Chukwudi Iwuji (When They See Us), and Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale). Change will play Sophia Song (a detective), Heyerdahl will play Captain Locke (a police officer with ties to Peacemaker), Iwuji will play Clemson Murn (a “leader”), and Munro will portray Larry Fitzgibbon (another police detective partnered with Song).

Since then, a couple of additional actors have joined the cast: Elizabeth Fith Ludlow (Another Life) and Rizwan Manji (Schitt’s Creek), who’ll play recurring characters Keeya (a gay woman with ties to Peacemaker, whose wife works for the government) and Jamil (details unknown). Earlier this month, Nhut Le (Stardumb) joined the cast as Judomaster, a superhero who specializes in martial arts.

Most recently, Alison Araya (Arrow) and Lenny Jacobson (For All Mankind) have been cast in the series in recurring roles as a married couple named Amber and Evan.

The Suicide Squad is slated to hit theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, part of its theatrical release strategy to get some of its projects out before audiences in the middle of a global pandemic. Earlier this week, HBO Max chief revealed that Peacekeeper would follow The Suicide Squad a couple of months later on the platform in January 2022.
