Sometimes when I hear people sing karaoke, I want to die. And based on a new film backed by District 78 Films and Father Greg Productions, I’m not the only one.

Deadline broke the news that a new horror comedy with the title Bad Karaoke is in the works, and that actors Lexi Underwood (Cruel Summer and pictured above in Disney+’s Sneakerella), Case Walker (The Other Two) and Kat Cunning (Purple Hearts) have signed on to star in it.

Here’s the synopsis of the film, per Deadline:

The film follows a group of friends in a cover band making their way from Portland, Oregon, to perform at a wedding in Napa. When they discover an abandoned karaoke machine in the back of a dive bar, songwriter Emily (Underwood), bassist Noah (Walker), and their motley band crew must find a way to defeat the cursed machine before it finishes them all off.

Cunning’s character is Hannah, the lead singer of the band who, according to Deadline, “has come to terms with their career as a cover band musician only to learn it might become the death of them.”

The film is helmed by Chris Lightbody and Robert J. Steinmiller Jr., in what appears to be their directing debut, though the two both acted in a 2023 mockumentary film called Bootyology. The script for Bad Karaoke comes from Lightbody and Spencer Yaras, both of whom co-wrote Bootyology with Joe Eddy.

Yaras told Deadline: “We knew we wanted to do something that paid tribute to our love of horror comedies as well as music, so we thought ‘what if karaoke killed you?’” To which Lightbody added: “Which happens a lot, actually.”

Bad Karaoke starts filming this month, though there’s no news yet on when or where we’ll be able to watch and sing along. icon-paragraph-end
