Have you been aching to see a CGI-ed Toothless act against a flesh-and-blood version of Hiccup? If so, you’re in luck—Universal Pictures has a live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon well underway.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dean DeBlois—the director behind the three animated films—is back for the live-action rendition and will be the writer, director, and producer of the new feature, which already has a release date slated for March 14, 2025.

DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon movies, which came out in 2010, 2014, and 2019, have more than proven their worth at the box office. The first garnered almost $500 million worldwide, while the second and third features earned $622 million and $525 million respectively. Given the franchise’s success, it already has an animated television series, and it’s no surprise that the powers that be wanted to replication the original movies’ success with a live-action version.
The animated features, which are based on the books by Cressida Cowell, follow a young Viking boy named Hiccup who befriends an injured dragon named Toothless in a society that wants him to kill dragons instead. The two grow up together in the subsequent films as their relationship grows and the dynamic between humans and dragons changes, in better and worse ways.
According to THR, the live-action version will mirror this story, though there will likely be some changes from the original storyline if we take the Disney “live-action” versions of their features as any indication. No news on the casting front yet, though THR states that the process of finding the humans and dragons for the project has already started.
