If you give me youths running away from a sudden attack of freezingness, I will think of Jake Gyllenhaal. That’s just how it is. But that’s also entirely the vibe in the trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Climate change is coming for you! Or something called the “Death Chill” is, anyway.

I advise not thinking about anything in this trailer too hard—or at all, for that matter. Why does the freeze sometimes kill instantly and sometimes people are standing comfortably around in mere parkas? I don’t know. Possibly no one knows. Because magic! And ghosts! Ghosts who freeze you to death but also scare you to death! There’s a whole explanation of how it happens which also doesn’t make a lot of sense. You’re here for nostalgia, not sense, right?
Here’s the synopsis:
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
A whole lot of Ghostbusters franchise stars return for this sequel, including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, and—bless her—Annie Potts. Kumail Nanjiani and a weirdly gleeful Patton Oswalt are now also on the scene.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and written by Kenan and Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman. It’s in theaters March 29, 2024.
