Way back in the previous decade, a movie called Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones disappointed critics and fans alike with a confusing plot, excessive CGI, and some questionable performances. However a year later, an animated continuation of the story called Star Wars: Clone Wars debuted on the Cartoon Network to mostly critical praise. Not to be confused with the current CG version, this mini-show, created by famed animator Genndy Tartakovsky somehow felt more like Star Wars than the Star Wars movie upon which it was based. And now the same thing might be happening with Tron.
Now, while the new Tron: Legacy received mostly critical derision it has nonetheless spawned an animated series titled Tron: Uprising. Starring Bruce Boxleitner as Tron himself, this new show will also feature the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, and Paul Reubens, among others. Is it possible that this upcoming show can do the same thing Clone Wars did for the Star Wars universe? According to news reports, the new show will take place entirely in the grid and tell the story of how CLU came to power prior to the new film. It has also been reported that this show won’t air until summer 2012. Is this too long of a wait to return to the grid? Here’s a first look.
Does watching this trailer make you excited for Tron’s search for a new Tron? Will having more Tron in Tron make Tron better? Is The Box finally getting the love he deserves?

…who cares if critics like something or not? The original Tron didn’t meet with critical praise. I love the new Tron movie, personally.
As for the cartoon? I’ll take a wait and see attitude.
So, they had to hem and haw to get Boxleitner back for the movie (which I really enjoyed. I watched the original film on video as a kid) but he’ll do an Animated series? Mmmkaaay… It looks great and the voice cast looks pretty good, but my first reaction was tepid. How much of my childhood must they recycle, anyway?
The style is a bit “Speed Racer on a light cycle,” no? (Not that that’s a bad thing, necessarily.)
I think Tron, as a concept, was begging to be turned into an animated feature or series. I love well-done CGI and the effects in Tron: Legacy were top-notch, but CGI has a tendency to take itself too seriously. Animation will inject more fun into the series… which is the same argument I would make for Attack of the Clones, actually.
Yes, 2012 is too long a wait. I’m so tired of everything taking forever to appear on TV. SyFy’s Caprica and the V remake would air a few episodes and then go dark for months and months – until one day, BAM, they’re back on without warning, but on a different day and at a different time. Oh, but wait, the audience, who got tired of waiting and trying to figure out just when the hell these things air (wtf is season 2.5? Two POINT five?), moved on to other things. And then, gee, the shows tanked with no audience left to watch them. A note to the execs: don’t play hard to get with your TV shows, you’ll lose everytime.
So season one is almos tdone — what’s the verdict?
