As part of its original sequential art offerings, each month tor.com will be bringing you a new A Softer World strip, by the inimitable Joey Comeau and Emily Horne.

There are years worth of classic strips here, but this one is ours.

Joey Comeau

Author

Joey is a firm believer in the idea that if you can't be a good example, you have an obligation to be a horrible warning. He writes the comic A Softer World. He has a degree in linguistics which really only comes in handy when smart-asses try to correct his grammar at parties.

You have induced me to search for a definition of “vale”! It is a wide river valley. More fun than a barrel, indeed!

The funny thing is, I believe the original reference is a “veil” of tears. As in something that conceals the face. A part of the joke perhaps? Or a mistake on the part of the author? Like the other unanswerable question “how many licks to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop” – we may never know.

You’ve put so much thought into that, I almost hate to tell you that you’re wrong: It really is “vale of tears”.

Interestingly enough, I kept waiting for someone else to notice that there’s no download option for this fourth installment of A Softer World, yet nobody except me seems to care…

A Softer World 5 is up now and has the download option right from the start… how odd.

If you hadn’t mentioned it, I’d never have noticed the installments of A Softer World had a download option. What is there to download?

With most episodes, you get the option to download a .pdf of the comic to read later without being online… I noticed that they still haven’t given a link to download the 4th issue yet… maybe they won’t.

6 years later I notice my mistake. Better late then never? Thank you anobium.
