As part of its original sequential art offerings, each month tor.com will be bringing you a new A Softer World strip, by the inimitable Joey Comeau and Emily Horne.

There are years worth of classic strips here, but this one is ours.

Joey Comeau

Author

Joey is a firm believer in the idea that if you can't be a good example, you have an obligation to be a horrible warning. He writes the comic A Softer World. He has a degree in linguistics which really only comes in handy when smart-asses try to correct his grammar at parties.

In the future, you can try this:
Click View>Page Source (Ctrl+U in windows firefox)

Alt-text will show up in there. Just do a search for a unique word in the alt-text you can see.

The AltText gets chopped off for me too. I think it happens in IE (7 or 8). They should look into it. Fun comic though.

Yeah, wonder why the alt-text gets chopped off. I’m using Chrome, but it does it in Firefox too… (Of course nothing actually to do with the awesomeness of the comic. =P)

That’s because it isn’t Alt-text. It’s some kind of custom Javascript tooltip. For the alt-text problem (on sites like xkcd), there used to be a FF extension upto FF2.x but since FF3, it hasn’t been necessary (at least I don’t see it in my addons anymore :)).

As for the javascript bug above, it’s human error :).

var JTooltips = new Tips($$(‘.hasTip’), { maxTitleChars: 50, fixed: false})

Guess what? It’s 49 characters up to “than_”. So, to the coders I humbly suggest that they merely set that number … erhm… high!

Good comic though – my first time! I’ll be lurking on here more frequently now =D.

I love this strip! It’s one of the comics I have bookmarked for (nearly) daily reading
