Video game company Little Orbit and Brandon Sanderson have just announced a new original installment of his best-selling Mistborn series: Mistborn: Birthright.
This upcoming RPG video game, planned for 2013 release on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC platforms, and Mac will feature an original storyline created by Sanderson, set several hundreds of years before the first Mistborn novel, and will focus on a unique combat system that puts Allomancy into the hands of gamers. Players will suit up as Fendin “Fiddle” Fathvell, an arrogant young nobleman who must quickly master his newfound Allomantic abilities before forces at work can destroy his entire family.
Matthew Scott, CEO of Little Orbit, released a statement in regards to Mistborn: Birthright: “I’m a huge fan of the series, and I cannot wait to get this into the hands of gamers. Between the distinctive magic system, the story twists Brandon has planned for the game, and the rich depth of character skills, we’re creating something very unique for players to enjoy.”
“As an avid gamer, I’m extremely excited by this opportunity,” responded Sanderson. “The chance to write the story for a Mistborn game while working with a team of talented developers is, quite literally, living a dream.”
Little Orbit has just launched the online portal for Mistborn: Birthright, which you can visit here and on Facebook and Twitter.
And here’s a first look at Fiddle himself:

Looks like he’s a Coinshot! Well, at least a Coinshot…
I really want to be excited for this but I’m just a little wary. I’ve been hurt before. I’ll stay optomistic and hope for the best. It’s going to really rely on how Allomancy will work in-game.
Also, Fiddle is wearing a Mistborn cloak in that picture so I’m guessing you’ll be a full Mistborn.
PS3 and Xbox 360. No PC release planned? Sadface.
Ah, sorry Mouette, it WILL be available for PC. We’ve updated the article with that information.
Brandon Sanderson’s blog mentioned is that the developers include people who worked on the original Baldur’s Gate and Fallout. That’s good news for the RPG and dialogue elements. Hopefully they can do a good allomancy system that is fun to play and feels right.
*squeeeeeeee* :D Sadface is gone, I shall now bask in happiness.
I might explode, I am so EXCITED!!!
Definitely buying this. And I don’t even really like video games that much.
Not a big gamer either but if it’s cool I’ll try it our for sure.
It will be interesting how the technical aspects of allomancy work out. Particularly with iron and steel. I wonder how we will be able to go about which metal to push or pull, how hard, etc.
Definitely exciting, especially since Brandon Sanderson is writing the story.
Being able to choose a male or female allomancer would be nice, in this case, given that many of us are enamored of the character of Vin, to begin with :)
edit: I realize the game takes place long before her time, but she is one of the reasons some of us were hooked on the trilogy, in the first place.
yeah I’m more than a bit wary of them trying to make a video game using a magic system as versatile as allomancy. I think it CAN be done but am worried that with an average budget for a game it might not work so well.
HOWEVER, if it’s got the kind of storyline and writing that Brandon can produce and is backed up by other skilled writers working on dialogue and so on then it will hopefully be a good game and perhaps good enough to then get some serious $$$ put towards a sequel that could continue to have good RPG aspects and use the extra budget to really make the allomancy as versatile and amazing as the novels made it.
So… a little wary but also hoping it will go well.
*Raises eyebrow*
The team working on it has only made like four games prior to this, and by my standards they were all crappy(I.E. a hair styling simulator and some small scale racing and combat games). I’ll keep an eye on this one, but I can’t say I’m very optimistic about this.
I hope this turns out pretty good. What really worries me is that they keep calling it an RPG, and I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with RPGs in the past as they tend to have lack-luster combat systems and exposision the crap out of you.
I’m hopeful though, because after reading this article: http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2012/1564.html
It seems be more of an open-world style game, sorta like Infamous or Prototype.
