Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t come out until May 1, 2015, but already we’re being besieged with rumors for Avengers 3! Crazy ones, too—full of potential new Avengers, enough adventures for two movies, and other studios maybe playing nice and lending out their Marvel characters. Here’s your guide to the latest Avengers hearsay floating around.
If you’re a complete spoilerphobe, don’t read, on the offchance that there’s any truth to these rumors.
Rumor #1: We’re getting a whole new Avengers team.
The biggest potential game-changer that’s cropped up in the last few weeks suggests an irreversible change in the Avengers lineup. Badass Digest claims to have glimpsed the post-credits scene (in script form, that is) for Age of Ultron, wherein Captain America assembles an entirely new team. Rumor has it that Ms. Marvel is supposed to be one of the next generation of Avengers! Considering the rumor that Marvel’s next few movies won’t be origin stories, this would be a great way to introduce new characters almost immediately.
Somewhat related is the persistent rumor that most of the Avengers get killed in Age of Ultron, brought on by the SDCC footage.
Rumor #2: Avengers 3 will be split into two movies.
Blame The Hunger Games and The Hobbit for this guess—that Marvel Studios will break up Avengers 3 into two films, to be released in May 2018 and May 2019. It’s also the most realistic, especially if Avengers 3 is the big showdown with Thanos and the Guardians of the Galaxy crossover, as many believe. There’s a lot of story to pack into that one if they so choose. Of course, with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans’ deals expiring after Avengers 3 (or the first of two films), that could make things tricky and/or very expensive.
Rumor #3: Spider-Man will (temporarily) join the Avengers.
Whereas it seems as if Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox will remain unentwined when it comes to their Marvel Comics characters, the latest hearsay is that Sony Pictures is willing to be more cooperative. According to HitFix,
While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool Spider-Man plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.
As they say, there’s no corroboration for this rumor. But considering how poorly The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did critically, it could behoove Sony to link up with Marvel, who can show them how it’s done. However, the only reaction we’ve had to this rumor comes from Spider-Man producer Avi Arad, who would want Spidey to be front-and-center, not in some middling cameo.
But if Peter Parker teamed up with whoever’s left at the end of Age of Ultron, we could get something of a new lineup! And it would look pretty New Avengers-y. In the meantime, we’ll just look at these GIFs that imagine a Marvel Cinematic Universe with all its characters.
