According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm’s next standalone film will center on fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett. It’s long been rumored, but THR reports that Logan writer/director James Mangold will co-write the film with Simon Kinberg (who served as an executive producer on Star Wars: Rebels).
No word yet on what the plot would be, whether it would be a prequel or sequel to the original trilogy. The last time we saw Boba Fett in the linear canon timeline was The Clone Wars, but of course fans have long wondered how he got out of the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi. In fact, the Legends universe collection Tales from Jabba’s Palace has a story about exactly that, and would be a great place to begin looking for inspiration. Boba Fett was a mainstay of the Legends ’verse, and we have a lot of thoughts on those books.
No official confirmation yet from Lucasfilm or Disney. There is also currently an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie in the works. In the meantime, we give you Boba Fett’s unofficial theme song:
