Apple TV+ has a hardboiled detective series coming our way this spring. The show, titled Sugar, has Colin Farrell starring as the titular character, a hardboiled private investigator in current-day Los Angeles whose latest case—searching for a missing woman—entangles him with the city’s dark underside. The streaming platform released a trailer for the series today, and it looks like the series from writer Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) is marinating in noir aesthetic even though it takes place in sunny SoCal.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Is anyone else getting some Chinatown vibes?
In addition to Farrell, Sugar stars Kirby (Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), James Cromwell (Succession), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling), and Alex Hernandez (Invasion). That’s an impressive roster of actors, and that, along with this trailer (and my penchant for noir mysteries based in Los Angeles), make me eager to see this once it hits my television screen.
The first two episodes of Sugar’s eight-episode season premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 5, 2024 on Apple TV+. The remaining episodes will drop weekly every Friday.
