Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Raya and the Last Dragon) stars in the Hulu horror feature, Control Freak, along with some malevolent insectoid force that may or may not be living inside her head!
That, at least, is what the trailer for Control Freak suggests the film is about. In it, Tran plays a motivational speaker tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head. We see her scratching a bunch of times, and then cut to an ant and other such insects, so much so that I can’t help thinking about the cordyceps fungus that takes control of ants and, in our current timeline, is the inspiration for shows like The Last of Us.
I don’t think cordyceps is coming into play here—Tran’s itch seems more supernatural in origin—but it does look equally disturbing. The movie comes from Shal Ngo, who wrote and directed the short film “Control” in 2021, which became part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween series. Control Freak is the feature-length version of this short, and looks compellingly disturbing.
In addition to Tran, Control Freak stars Miles Robbins, Toan Le, and Kieu Chinh. The movie premieres on Hulu on March 13, 2025.
