If you sometimes feel like every notable romantasy novel of the last several years is getting a movie or TV show adaptation, you’ll be happy to know that you haven’t been consumed by the jaws of paranoia quite yet. Studios are practically falling over themselves to acquire the rights to romantasy titles and bring some of the most successful literary hits in recent years to the widest audience possible. It’s difficult to remember the last time that so many books that people both read and loved were the subject of a gold rush acquisition spree, and it’s genuinely exciting to think of all of that kissing and questing coming to big and small screens near us sometime soon.
Well… maybe. As usual, there is a big difference between acquiring the rights to an adaptation and actually developing, writing, shooting, and releasing said adaptation. So while there are quite a few notable romantasy novel series and films currently in development, it may be quite some time before you actually get to watch any of them. To help you keep track of the madness, here’s a rundown of every known romantasy adaptation currently in development, which we will be updating as we (hopefully) learn a little more about these projects.
A Court of Thorns and Roses

Network/Studio: Hulu / 20th Television
Release Date: Cancelled (2025)
What The Book Is About: After killing a wolf, huntress Feyre Archeron learns that she accidentally murdered a faerie. She is soon banished to the realm of Prythian by the High Fae Tamlin, where she finds danger, intrigue, and an unexpected burgeoning romance for Tamlin himself.
What We Know About the Adaptation: The bad news is that the Hulu adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses series has been cancelled. What exactly happened to the project remains a mystery mired in speculation. The result is the same. All parties involved have walked away from the project, and there’s no indication it’s going to be revived at Hulu.
So why mention it at all? Well, besides being a notable name, the potentially good news is that the idea for this adaptation isn’t quite dead yet. Maas could still shop the series around and is reportedly very much interested in doing just that. Ultimately, it feels like an idea that will eventually find a home.
Alchemy of Secrets

Network/Studio: Universal Television
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: The Alchemy of Secrets series is set in a re-imagined version of Los Angeles that is built on and around secret magical worlds. A young woman named Holland St. James learns of those worlds through a mysterious folklore class and soon must venture into them in pursuit of a mystical cure for her pending demise.
What We Know About the Adaptation: Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec is currently set to lead an Alchemy of Secrets adaptation for Universal Studios. Additional details about the adaptation are practically non-existent at this time, but Alchemy of Secrets’ unique setting and the obvious passion of everyone involved with the project make this one of the more intriguing romantasy adaptations on the horizon.
Assistant to the Villain

Network/Studio: Legendary Entertainment
Release Date: TBA
What the Book Is About: A desperate young woman responds to an odd posting for an otherwise seemingly menial job and soon finds herself working for a notoriously dastardly figure. He is cruel, disgusting, and, strangely, kind of appealing in a dangerous way, you know? Surely, a tawdry romance couldn’t emerge from such circumstances, right?… right?
What We Know About the Adaptation: In 2023, Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Assistant to the Villain. Despite what was described as a competitive bidding process, we know very little about the proposed TV series. There is no showrunner attached, no lead actors confirmed, and, naturally, not even a vague release window available.
Divine Rivals (The Letters of Enchantment Series)

Network/Studio: Paramount Pictures
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Two rival journalists venture into the battlefield as a war between the Gods rages on. Aided by magical typewriters, they craft correspondences that mysteriously land in each other’s hands. They soon find themselves falling for each other even as the world around them slowly falls apart.
What We Know About the Adaptation: Sofia Alvarez (writer of the first two To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before movies) is set to write the film adaptation of Divine Rivals for Paramount Pictures. There’s no word on whether she will also direct the picture, and there’s also been no update about the overall status of this project since it was announced in June 2025. As one of the hottest properties in the romantasy adaptation bidding wars, though, we expect to hear more about it soon.
Dragon Cursed

Network/Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: At a time when dragons rule the skies over what little remains of society, a young woman begins a gruelling series of trials that will determine her future and possibly the fate of all. She and her companions fear not just the dragons but the threat of a curse that could turn them into one of the winged beasts. An unusual relationship soon forms between the young woman and a Mercy Knight, one of the guardians assigned to escort the teenagers during their trials and, if necessary, kill them if they become a dragon.
What We Know About the Adaptation: Very little so far. To be fair, though, this adaptation was only announced in January 2026. It’s set to be adapted into a movie rather than a TV show, but there are currently no leads or creative team members attached to the project.
Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Series)

Network/Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
Release Date: TBA (Likely 2027 or 2028)
What The Story Is About: Fourth Wing is the first entry in author Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series, which focuses on a young woman named Violet Sorrengail who dreams of becoming a dragon rider. Fourth Wing follows Sorrengail during her time at the Basgiath War College, where she both learns to become one of the elite warriors in the kingdom of Navarre and strikes up a romance with one of the most powerful students at the academy.
What We Know About the Adaptation: As one of the biggest romantasy hits in recent years, Fourth Wing is appropriately set to receive one of the biggest adaptations on this particular slate. Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society is developing the series for Prime Video, with Yarros signed on as an executive producer. Though Amazon acquired the rights to the Empyrean series in 2023, we’re still waiting on updates regarding Fourth Wing’s series debut as well as the possible future scope of this project. The latest substantial update about the series came in 2025 when Meredith Averill replaced Moira Walley-Beckett as showrunner, though most involved with the project were both strangely quiet about the change and have remained largely silent about the project since.
From Blood and Ash (The Blood and Ash Series)

Network/Studio: Sony Pictures Television
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: The first book in the Blood and Ash series introduces us to Poppy: a young woman with a solitary destiny that conflicts with her more personal and passionate desires. Said desires begin to consume Poppy as she begins to fall for one of the guards assigned to ensure that she fulfills a future that may decide the fate of her kingdom.
What We Know About the Adaptation: In 2024 Deadline reported that Sony had acquired the rights to the five books in the From Blood and Ash series after Amazon Studios allowed their option period for the adaptation to expire. We haven’t heard much about the series since then, though it’s potentially worth noting that Sony also produced the successful Outlander franchise and may be looking for From Blood and Ash to serve as a soft follow-up/replacement for that long-running series that is about to conclude.
Gild (The Plated Prisoner Series)

Network/Studio: Mandalay Television
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Gild, the first book in the Plated Prisoner series, retells the King Midas legend from the perspective of a young woman named Auren who has been “touched” by the king and kept in a gilded cage. Soon, an incredible series of events causes Auren to question the love and intentions of Midas even as she dreads the dangers of a world that has become increasingly unfamiliar to her.
What We Know About the Adaptation: In March 2025, Deadline confirmed that Kate Rorick (writer for The Librarians, Cloak & Dagger) had agreed to showrun the Gild TV series for Mandalay Television. Around that same time, it was also revealed that Mandalay would soon begin shopping the series around, though we haven’t heard any updates about the show since then. That’s hardly unheard of, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for updates to ensure that this series is still technically in development.
Lightlark

Network/Studio: Universal Pictures
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: The pleasantly Brigadoon-esque world of Lightlark is set on the titular island, which appears every 100 years to host a deadly competition between the rulers of six mystical realms. As Isla Crown tries to prepare her people (a group of temptresses known as the Wildlings) for the games, she finds that her best-laid plans are complicated by the intentions of her rivals and the unexpected allure of forbidden love.
What We Know About the Adaptation: In 2022, Lightlark author Alex Aster confirmed that Universal Pictures had acquired the film rights to her novel. Aster also noted that she would join the project as an executive producer. In 2024, Aster noted that she’s seen parts of a script and that there are people attached to the project she can’t talk about. Since then, we’ve learned pretty much nothing. Such production timelines aren’t unheard of, but we’re eager to learn more.
Obsidian (The Lux Series)

Network/Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Popular teenager Katy Swartz is forced to move to West Virginia, where she finds a lifestyle full of “thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.” Her prospects change, though, when she meets her new neighbor who is not only incredibly hot, but is, in fact, an extraterrestrial being with incredible powers that happen to include the key to Swartz’s heart.
What We Know About the Adaptation: In September 2025, we learned that Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders (Smallville) had signed on to showrun and produce an adaptation of Obsidian for Amazon. The terms of the arrangement suggest that this will eventually be an adaptation of the entire Lux series, though that adaptation will obviously start with the first book in that series, Obsidian. That’s about all we know for the moment, though the fact this project has showrunners attached puts it ahead of some of the competition.
Powerless (The Powerless Trilogy)

Network/Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Paedyn Gray is an “Ordinary” in a world ruled by powerful elites who possess incredible mystical abilities. While trying to disguise herself as one of the elites, Paedyn finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly contest that threatens to expose her lack of abilities and compromise her love for the prince.
What We Know About the Adaptation: Will Gluck‘s Olive Bridge and Lyrical Media production companies acquired the rights to the Powerless novels in 2024. In 2025, it was announced that a TV adaptation of the novels was formally in development for Prime Video. There have been no significant updates since then, though the project looks to be pleasantly on-track.
Quicksilver (Fae & Alchemy Series)

Network/Studio: Netflix
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Saeris Fane is a thief in a harsh desert land where survival is often a luxury. Following a chance encounter with Death, she is transported to the icy world of the Fae where she is caught in the middle of an ancient conflict. Bound to a Fae warrior named Kingfisher, she must find hope, love, and salvation in a place very different from her home (but no less perilous).
What We Know About the Adaptation: This is, somewhat surprisingly, one of the only romantasy adaptations that Netflix has in its production pipeline. While there are few details available about the project at this time (it was only announced in late 2024), it’s easy enough to imagine Netflix prioritizing this project, especially as some of the other romantasy adaptations out there start to finally (hopefully) get release dates. At present, it’s believed that Netflix’s Quicksilver adaptation will be a movie rather than a series, but there have been hints that they are interested in eventually adapting further Fae & Alchemy stories should that movie be successful.
Shield of Sparrows

Network/Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
Release Date: TBA
What The Book Is About: Nobody told Princess Odessa life was going to be this way. Forced into a political marriage designed to seal an alliance, Odessa soon finds herself escorted to a strange and dangerous land by a man she barely knows. Yet, these unfortunate events offer Odessa the chance to prove that she is much more than a victim of circumstances.
What We Know About the Adaptation: Yet another Amazon MGM romantasy project, Shield of Sparrows is currently set to be adapted into a movie. In September 2025, it was announced that Derek Kolstad will write the adaptation and join author Devney Perry as an executive producer on the film. This is certainly one of the hottest romantasy properties at the moment, though we’ll see how it fits into Amazon MGM’s intended romantasy release and production schedules.
