Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, is set to come back for a second season.
What we’ll see in the upcoming episodes remains unknown, though the first season has already touched on events in Liu’s second book, The Dark Forest. And while we don’t know how much more from that book will make its way to the television show, we do know that the book will have at least one other direct connection to what we’ll see on the screen.
Reactor can exclusively announce that Jess Hong, who plays Jin Cheng (a retooling of the books’ Cheng Xin) on the Netflix series, will be narrating a new audiobook edition of The Dark Forest.
“I was thrilled to step into the world of The Dark Forest and bring Cixin Liu’s incredible vision to life through audio,” Hong said in a statement. “Having portrayed Jin Cheng in the Netflix series, it’s been an especially amazing experience to connect with this universe and its complex characters in a new way.”
The second book in Liu’s trilogy centers on something we’ve seen set up in the first season of the show. The Trisolaris alien invasion is coming to Earth in 400 or so years, though through their subatomic sophons all of humanity’s war plans are an open book to them. Only the human mind remains closed off to the sophons, and so four people are designated “Wallfacers,” and are given ultimate powers to come up with their own plans to save humanity… plans that they share with no one else.
In the books, one of those four Wallfacers is Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, who is befuddled by his appointment. In the series, that role is taken on by Saul Durand, played by Jovan Adepo. In both versions, the Trisolaris want these characters dead, for reasons currently unknown.
You’ll be able to hear Hong narrate The Dark Forest‘s Wallfacer story when the audiobook becomes available wherever audiobooks are sold on July 8, 2025. You can check out a video of Hong in the recording booth below:
