A ton of new information on the North American magic school, Ilvermorny, was just dropped onto Pottermore. But that’s not all! You can now get Sorted into the various Houses (if you have a Pottermore account, so sign on up).
As a reminder, the four Ilvermorny Houses are Horned Serpent, Wampus, Pukwudgie, and Thunderbird! Here is where you go for the Sorting, provided you have a Pottermore account. (I got Horned Serpent, which seems to be the brainy house? Not what I expected.) These Houses don’t break down quite the same way the Hogwarts ones do; instead, they are associated as follows:
- Horned Serpent–the Mind, a house favoring scholars
- Thunderbird–the Soul, a house favoring adventurers
- Pukwudgie–the Heart, a house favoring healers
- Wampus–the Body, a house favoring warriors
So, sort of similar, but not quite? There’s not a direct correlation, which makes sense. The most notable difference is that not one of these houses seems Slytherin-y. Instead we have Wampus, which sounds kind of like “the sporty house.” Go jock wizards!
Now, check out this introductory video for the school, which has some gorgeous animation. We’ll have more on the background Rowling offered on the school in due course.
Ravenclaw/Thunderbird!
Strange…for Hogwarts I got Ravenclaw, but for Ilvermorny, Wampus. Which seems to be the Gryffindor-ish house? I’ve never played sports, and I don’t generally think of myself as a “warrior” type…. I rather expected Horned Serpent, but apparently not. I liked the Hogwarts questions better.
Horned Serpent! I hope they’re cool in the movie!
@2 I got the same! I’m definitely not a jock, Ravenclaw seems more my speed than Wampus.
Ravenclaw/Thunderbird here too. Interesting.
Thunderbird.
For Hogwarts, I got Slyherin, which was the least expected, I must say …
Well without checking I know I’m in Thunderbird because Thunderbird is capital B Badass.
William Edward Badass.
A House named after fortified wine, yup that’s the house for me.
I landed in Gryffindor and Thunderbird, with a 14″ Spruce/Dragon Heartstring wand with slightly springy flexibility.
Gryffindor surprised me rather a lot.
Hufflepuff which really fits me, and Thunderbird which does not. I’m more of a scholar/teacher/writer, not an adventurer except in an intellectual sense.

I got the exact same combo, and I couldn’t disagree with wampus enough….
ALWAYS Gryffindor. Seriously, I’ve scored Gryffindor on any Sorting quiz I’ve ever taken, and three times on Pottermore.
Ilvermorny House is Pukwudgie.
I’m a grumpy gnome-like thing. Also a Healer. I like it.
I got Hufflepuff and Horned Serpent. I was a little surprised on Hufflepuff as I was Gryffindor in the previous sorting I had done through the website. But my new sorting has grown on me and I’m very happy with it.
I thought the new wand builder was also really cool. I got Redwood, Phoenix Feather core, and 14 1/2″ Hard Flexibility. I really want to be able to buy this wand when I go visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter sometime in the next few years. All of the little bits and bobs of information related to the sorting and the wand were really cool and I thought described me fairly well.
Seriously how does someone end up in Wampus and Hufflepuff? Hufflepuff sure, that fits me to a Tee, but Wampus? Im almost a pacifist for crying out loud! I wanted to be fortefied wine.
But my wand is perfect 14″ hornwood with a dragon heartstring.
@1, 5 – Ravenclaw and Thunderbird as well, with a brittle 12 & 1/2 inch redwood wand with a unicorn hair core – haha.
@@.-@ MDNY @11 Dantalion88 –I’m so glad it’s not just me! Based on these and other comments, I think the Ilvermorny sorting may be a little off. The sorting test was shorter than the Hogwarts sorting, and I think being as it’s all new, there’s not quite as firm a grasp on what they’re going for.
I did like the wand I got though: alder wood, phoenix feather core, 10 3/4″, slightly springy.
I’m just going to say I was an exchange student and stick with Ravenclaw.
I got Wampus, even though I got Hufflepuff from Hogwarts. Honestly, I think I’d be better sorted into Ravenclaw and Horned Serpent. Not that I hate Hufflepuffs or anything, but the description doesn’t really match me well (nor does that of Wampus).
Anyhow, I think the story itself is a great backstory for North America’s school of magic. It makes it clear that Ilvermorny was a cooperative effort between the Massachusetts natives and European settlers, as well as featuring a number of mythic creatures from the Americas.
Ravenclaw/Horned Serpent, 14.5″ ash wood wand, unicorn core, slightly yielding flexibility.
@2 @@.-@ @11 Ravenclaw/ Wampus as well.
