Henry Cavill’s days of playing Geralt of Rivia are numbered—and dated. Netflix has announced the release date for the third season of The Witcher. Or rather, release dates: As seems to be a trend with the streamer, season three will arrive in two “volumes” in June and July.
This very short first teaser contains one full sentence: “Now, for the first time, I understand real fear,” Geralt intones. Everyone looks very stressed! But that’s not really anything new.
Here’s the synopsis for this season, via Variety:
As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.
The Witcher, which was created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich from the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, co-stars Freya Allen as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. Returning cast also includes Joey Batey, MyAnna Buring, Tom Canton, Eamon Farren, Wilson Mbomio and Mimi Ndiweni.
After this season, Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth, of Hunger Games fame. Cavill left the series after announcing that he would return to the role of Superman—a role which is no longer his. But surely Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 series and film will keep him busy.
Cavill’s final Witcher bow begins on Netflix on June 29th, with the five-episode Volume 1 of season three. The last three episodes arrive July 27th. Here’s the poster!
