The Goonies first came out in theaters 40 years ago! To celebrate the anniversary, Fathom Events will be screening the movie for two days this January (even though the original came out in June… maybe it will head to theaters once again in six months; I won’t complain if it does).
The group announced the news on social media and their website, where you can also preorder tickets at a number of different cinema chains. So far it looks like there will only be screenings on Sunday, January 19 and Monday, January 20.
Watching The Goonies brings on strong feelings of nostalgia if you’re of a certain age, and it’s nice to see that the original is heading back to the big screen rather than be continually teased by the rumors of a sequel that have been percolating for decades. The 1985 film, of course, comes from director Richard Donner and was written by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus. It follows a group of misfit kids who search for the lost pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willy, in hopes of saving their neighborhood from getting razed by a development company who wants to build a country club there. (Spoiler: They have lots of adventures and do, indeed, find One-Eyed Willy’s hoard, putting a stop to the corporate bigwig who wants to destroy their neighborhood. Huzzah!)
