Back in December 2022, we found out Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with The Expanse alums Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, had signed up for a TV adaptation of the 2018 version of the Sony PlayStation game, God of War.

Today, however, Deadline broke the news that Judkins, Fergus, and Osby are no longer involved in the project, despite completing numerous scripts. According to the trade, Sony and Amazon MGM Studios both praised the writing but wanted the series to take “a different creative direction.”

Despite the mass exodus of the creative team, Prime Video and Sony are still bullish on getting an adaptation into production, with Amazon and Sony planning to hire new writers to tackle the material.

When the series was first announced, it was described as follows:

Kratos, aka the God of War, who after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

No news on when this adaptation will move forward. But given the project has to start from scratch, it will likely be a year or two before we see anything on-screen. icon-paragraph-end
