The horror movie Barbarian caused waves when it came out last year and secured writer-director Zach Cregger an eight-figure deal for his next film. Cregger is also producing other projects, and one of them is Companion, a film written by Drew Hancock, who will also make his debut directing the feature.

We don’t know much about the plot of Companion yet, but we do know, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, that Jack Quaid, who stars in The Boys and voices the character Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks (and will be playing the purple-haired ensign in an upcoming episode of Strange New Worlds, as pictured above) has signed on to star.
Companion has been a hot ticket item in the horror industry, with New Line winning the rights in a competitive bidding process. Cregger was initially going to direct, but got distracted by his own aforementioned project, Weapons. Cregger stayed on as a producer, however, and also supported Hancock making his directorial debut.
In addition to Cregger producing, the film also has Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures on board as well as Vertigo’s Roy Lee, who in addition to Barbarian has produced or executive produced over 100 projects including 2023’s Nimona adaptation, the IT films, and the Lego movies.
No news yet on when Companion will scare its way onto a screen near you. In the meantime, you can check out Quaid in The Boys on Prime Video, or on the upcoming Strange New Worlds crossover episode on Paramount+ when the second season begins airing on June 17, 2023.
