You can say one thing for Nintendo: When they decide to make a movie, they start making it fast. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason, the young stars of the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, were just announced in July—and we’ve already got our first look at them in costume.
Unfortunately, it’s just that: a look. A very green and lovely look that seems designed to spark speculation without revealing much. Link wears a classic green tunic that—so far as several Zelda-obsessed gamers on staff can determine—is not specific to any one Zelda game, though bears some resemblance to an outfit from Twilight Princess. Zelda’s dress is much like Link’s Champion’s Tunic from Breath of the Wild, which is the same blue as one of her primary outfits in that game. She has a bow and arrows, and he’s sitting on the ground being useless and tousled, which might make a person think of some of the captured memories from Breath of the Wild.
Two close-ups were also released alongside the nice shot in the field. Here’s Bragason as Zelda, looking clever and mysterious:

And here’s Ainsworth as Link, with an appropriately determined expression:

A recent leak from the set suggests that Dichen Lachman is also in the film, possibly playing Impa, which is honestly an inspired bit of casting. Impa is the best.
There have been no hints about the story the movie will tell, or whether it lines up with any specific Zelda games, tells a new story, pulls bits and pieces from various parts of Zelda lore, or does something wild and unpredictable. One way or the other, Hyrule will probably look nice.
The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball is directing the film, which will arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.
