Six seasons in, it’s pretty amazing that this show continues to top itself. The little-spinoff-that-could ventures into new territory—more aliens! alien burgers? alien… game shows? a singing robot!!?!—in the trailer for the upcoming season of Legends of Tomorrow. And if previous seasons are anything to go by, this probably isn’t even half of the weird new adventures the gang will find themselves on.
Last season saw fearless leader Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) abducted by aliens, so the team—especially Ava (Jes Macallan)—is anxious to get her back. But there’s so much else going on, as co-showrunner Phil Klemmer tells Entertainment Weekly: a new big bad, a Clue-like episode, a lot of alien secretions, and a straight-up Disney-esque animated episode, directed by Lotz and complete with music. (Honestly, it’s almost surprising these scrappy heroes haven’t been turned into cartoons yet.)
Once it got past its bumpy first season, Legends has been a consistent delight, mix and matching genres and tropes and villains and cast members with glee and creativity. There is truly no other show that could cross a story involving young Barack Obama with a subplot involving John Noble’s role as Denethor and also John Noble as his Legends character. If you need a break from super self-serious superheroes, this is the show you’re looking for.
The sixth season starts this Sunday, May 2nd, on The CW.
