If you are having a Day (and who amongst us is not often having a Day, these days), please be forewarned: This trailer for a movie about a tiny shell who wants to find his family is likely to evoke some feelings in you. Even Feelings, perhaps, with a capital F. Those feelings are aided by the dulcet tones of Phil Collins, whose jams just keep on turning up in trailers lately.
Marcel the Shell was introduced to the world waaaay back in 2010, when he made his debut in a short by Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate (who provides Marcel’s tiny little voice). Now, Marcel makes his feature debut in Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, in which a documentary filmmaker discovers this wee buddy and introduces him to the world.
This is very meta? Sort of? Fictionally meta? Here’s the official synopsis:
Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. A beloved character gets his big-screen debut in this hilarious and heartwarming story about finding connection in the smallest corners.
I did not plan on getting a little choked up over a tiny shell in colorful shoes this morning, but you never know what any day might bring. Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is in theaters on June 24th.
