Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Sherlock showrunner, Doctor Who writer, and supremely stuffy Mycroft Holmes Mark Gatiss has been cast in season 4 of Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, the GoT showrunners have not revealed which character he will be playing, but WinterIsComing.net speculates that he will be playing the previously unseen Mace Tyrell, patriarch of the Tyrell family. (A family that, we must say, has been doing a tremendous job of worming their way towards the Iron Throne.)

If Gatiss is indeed playing good ol’ Mace, might we see him make a grand entrance at Joffrey and Margaery’s wedding? And how many scenes will we get of Diana Rigg and Mark Gatiss together before our heads explode from too much awesome?

Other speculation ranges from Gatiss playing blacksmith Donal Noye to one of the forthcoming Greyjoys to…and this would be eyebrow-raising…Coldhands. Although not a possibility, it strikes us that Gatiss would also make a very convincing Varys if the show didn’t already have a very convincing Varys.

I’ve never seen Sherlock, so I can’t speak to ability, but lookswise he’s definitely more in line with Mace Tyrell than any of the others listed, except maybe Coldhands.

I always thought of Mace as more like a puffer fish, but could be. I actually like the idea of one of the other senior Greyjoys. CH would be awesome, or others who appear north of the Wall.

Other options – Donal is doubtful; if a NW member, more likely Ser Dennis Mallister. Doubtful it’s Doran or someone else from Dorne given the casting of a Mediterranean actor for Oberyn. Could be someone from Dany’s next location. Could be …Satan? (Dana Carvey Church Lady intonation).

They can do wonders with makeup, but he doesn’t scream SALTY VIKING RAIDER to me.

Donal Noye, I picture a lot more stout.

I’ve always imagined Mace Tyrell as the “Fat Oaf” the Queen of Thorns makes him out to be. My take is that Gatiss, with a little creative make-up and costuming, would be a great Doran Martell.

Ah yes, Doran Martell is a good call. I think he’d have made a pretty good Tywin Lanister myself.

Gatiss at the Comicon, said he’s already finished his Season 4 filing. WTF? Who could he be that would only requre a few days of filming?

My thought is one of the Greyjoys or Bloodraven or Doran Martell who could be introduced briefly and play a bigger role down the line Who???
