Marvel has added Chiwetel Ejiofor to play Baron Mordo in Dr. Strange! So, for those playing along at home, that’s Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, and possibly TILDA FREAKING SWINTON as The Ancient One. And they’re all going to do magic at each other and it’s going to be great. Seriously, the only way this gets better is if Loki shows up as Dr. Strange’s soulful ex-boyfriend who spends the entire movie being soaked by falling magical rain while dressed in a thin pale shirt. And then there’s like a ton of humidity so his and Tilda’s hair poofs out like in Only Lovers Left Alive. And…maybe Martin Freeman is there? Somehow? In a comic-relief cameo?
While Baron Mordo is usually depicted as a rival-turned-straight-up-villain, Deadline is reporting that the new Mordo will be more complex, and possibly incorporate a few other characters’ personalities into a character with more ambiguity, so we’ll end up with a character more like Loki or the Winter Soldier than a mustache twirling baddie. This continues Marvel’s dedication to exploring the grey areas in their expanding universe. This casting move also adds means that a character who’s white in the comics will be played by a black man, and that a character who’s usually a Tibetan male will be a white woman. Plus, suddenly everyone’s British? What does everyone think of these changes? Will Marvel’s foray into the mystical be a step forward? We’ll find out November 4th!
