There is a lot of entertainment out there these days, and a lot of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror titles to parse through. So we’re rounding up the genre shows coming out each month

Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day duke it out as the biggest titles of the month. But there are some other heavy-hitters, like the live action Moana and a new Minions movie.

Minions and Monsters — in theaters July 1

The latest installment in the Despicable Me universe sees the bumbling yellow back in the 1920s. They’re inspired to create their own monster movie, so they go around the world recruiting some classic monsters and discovering new ones. But the monsters they recruit want to wreak havoc on the world, so it’s up to the minions to save the planet!

Moana — in theaters July 10

It’s only been 10 years since the original Moana came out, but the Disney animation-to-live-action pipeline is churning faster than ever. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns to the role of shapeshifting Polynesian demigod Maui, with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia taking on the titular role. Like in the original, Moana sets sail in order to restore the heart of an ancient goddess.

Evil Dead Burn — in theaters July 10

Evil Dead Burn is the newest entry in the Evil Dead franchise, though it functions as a standalone. A grieving woman moves in with her in-laws after the death of her husband. But one by one, they transform into Deadites—the franchise’s undead parasitic spirits that possess living people and feed on their souls.

The Odyssey — in theaters July 17

Christopher Nolan takes on the legendary Greek epic. The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast including, but not limited to Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Lupita Nyong’o. Like Homer’s myth, The Odyssey follows Odysseus on his twenty-year journey from the battlefields of Troy back home to Ithaca, all while encountering monsters, witches, nymphs, and more.

Descendants: Wicked Wonderland — on Disney+ July 17

Move aside Barbenheimer—this year’s unlikely paired movie moment is Descended Odyssey. The ever popular Disney Channel (and now Disney Plus) original movie series is all about the next-generation of popular Disney characters. Which means classic characters like Belle and the Beast have kids, though there’s also some quirky choices like Dopey’s son. The new movie is a direct sequel to The Rise of Red and will dive into the ramifications of the previous movie’s time-traveling antics.

Her Private Hell — in select theaters July 24

In an eerie and mysterious dystopian city covered in a strange and poisonous mist, a young woman sets off on a quest to find her missing father. There’s a glittering hotel, a threatening entity named The Leatherman, and a tale of two very different father figures. Her Private Hell stars Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, and Havana Rose Liu.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day — in theaters July 31

The last time we saw the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man, he was in a bad place. His beloved Aunt May died and in order to save the world, he let the entire universe forget his existence. His best friends now live a life without him, and none of the heroes he fought alongside remember who he is. But he still picks up his mask and saves the day—even as a new threat looms. icon-paragraph-end
