Revealing the UK Cover of Susan Dennard’s Windwitch

Hot on the heels of our fabulous Truthwitch paperback, Tor Books UK has been working on the cover for its sequel, Windwitch. It’s been SO exciting to see the separate hardback and paperback looks take shape and I just love both of them. With the Windwitch HB, as with our Truthwitch HB, we are echoing the US look and going with the same character image – so the Windwitch Merik can look just as mysterious in both territories!

It was great to have this unifying link for US and UK Truthwitch editions and we thought this worked so well there.

Also keeping with the style we established in book one, our book two hardback is simpler than the US illustration. We’ve made an elaborate title font more of a focus, as is often the case with UK covers. And it’s hard to do a complex font and a complex background without the cover seeming too busy and full of information. It’s important for us to remember that the cover will be seen larger in the bookstores and very small online, where much detail is lost.

Our in-house designer Justine Anweiler worked closely with US illustrator Scott Grimando. And they’ve created something stunning here. I love the atmosphere, the palpable sense of magic at work and the mystery of the disguised figure. I’m also a fan of the way the sword directs the eye to the title. But what do you think?!

Truthwitch had a knock-out plot (here’s a reminder), but in book two Windwitch Prince Merik comes to the fore, the victim of the worst form of treachery. Iseult’s problems with the dangerous Bloodwitch Aeduan come to a head. And as for the Truthwitch Safi—all manner of dramas await her! If she survives, her actions will dictate the fate of the Witchlands.

Windwitch is available January 3, 2017 from Tor Teen in the US and Tor Books UK. From the catalog copy:

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery,” a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In this follow-up to New York Times bestselling Truthwitch, a shadow man haunts the Nubrevnan streets, leaving corpses in his wake—and then raising those corpses from the dead. Windwitch continues the tale of Merik—cunning privateer, prince, and windwitch.
