The people who want to make dinosaur movies will not be stopped by one little road bump in their search for a director. Earlier this month, Jurassic talks fell through with potential director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde), which was frankly a bummer; who wouldn’t want to see a dinosaur movie with the kind of action energy Atomic Blonde had?
But never fear; Gareth Edwards is here! As The Hollywood Reporter puts it, Edwards has “already weathered one tumultuous production thanks to his experience on Star Wars movie Rogue One.” More recently, he directed the divisive The Creator, which looked cool but did not live up to its promise.
Edwards is one of a gaggle of directors who made their name with modest and often inventive indies and were then scooped up to direct major franchise films. (See also: previous Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, Marc Webb, and, more recently, Chloé Zhao.) Edwards’ Monsters led directly into his first franchise job, the 2014 Godzilla. Given that that film led to a roaring renaissance for titans, it makes a certain kind of sense that another franchise might want him on board.
The next Jurassic World movie is already getting a decent amount of hype, in no small part because original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp has written the screenplay. As usual, the film will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. It’s already set for release on July 2, 2025, and is expected to begin production this summer.
