Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Teaser Ties the Whole Series Together

Over the weekend, Lucasfilm showed off some of its upcoming projects at Disney’s D23 conference, including a release date for the final season of The Clone Wars, a trailer for The Mandalorian, and a special teaser for The Rise of Skywalker. That teaser is now online, and it teases how the final installment of the Skywalker Saga ties the entire franchise together.

Lucasfilm released the first teaser for the film earlier this year, and it included what seems to be a notable line from Luke Skywalker: “A thousand generations live in you now.” That sentiment is echoed here as this teaser runs through the events of past Star Wars films, starting with the Original Trilogy, and ending up with The Rise of Skywalker. Luke Skywalker and the Jedi might be gone, but their legacy rests on Rey’s shoulders.

In a way, it feels very much like this is not just a conclusion to the Skywalker saga, but a goodbye for the franchise as well. The trailer is a neat look at the high points throughout the entire series, before closing out with some new footage from the upcoming finale.

What we get is pretty incredible-looking: Rey, Poe, Finn, C-3P0 and Chewie looking out over a desert encampment; General Leia Organa; a massive fleet of Imperial-era-looking Star Destroyers facing off against a Resistance flotilla; C-3P0 with red eyes; Rey training in a forest, and then facing off against Kylo Ren in the midst of a storm. The whole thing closes out with a clip of Emperor Palpatine saying “your journey nears its end,” accompanied by a brief clip of a hooded Rey deploying a red, double-bladed lightsaber.

Clearly, it’ll be plenty of fuel for a whole new set of Star Wars conspiracy theories for how it pieces together. We’ll find out how it ends up on December 20th, when the film hits theaters.

excellent trailer, looks like they had some unused footage of Carrie Fisher .

The little boyz who hated the last two for all the girl cooties on their Star Warz are already probably whining.

I’s so looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Strange sequence to present the past, playing OT clips ahead of PT clips. Breaks the fourth wall.

No idea what the titles means with ‘ties the series together’, cause I don’t see anything of that happen. Palpatine is NOT alive, its probably just his idiot ghost/memory lurking around that broken piece of Death Star, showing Rey some vision of a possible future (Rey dark side, for example). Its just all crap

DARK FORCE THEME! DARK REY THEME!  My biggest complaint with the first trailer was that the music was kinda generic (the other TFA and TLJ trailers had AMAZING music in them, even if it wasn’t always music in the movies)….so they basically already had me with the new Force theme variation over all the movie clips (I will always, always be a sucker for that.  Heck, I  teared up when I saw Star Wars :A New Hope in concert – the thing where they play the movie with an orchestra playing the entire soundtrack live – and got to hear the Force theme played live over the binary sunset because it was just one of the most chilling, perfect moments in my life. As an aside I 100% reccommend those if they come to your town, we’ve seen both ANH and ESB and I already bought my ROTJ tickets for May 2020).  I’m so, so, looking forward to whatever John Williams puts out for this one, especially knowing he’s said it will be his last Star Wars score.  (And yes, I know he doesn’t necessarily do the trailer music.)

But ahhh, my heart jumped at all the shots of my boy Luke (although man, it irritated me that they didn’t show the prequel scenes first.  Kind of a weird decision. But I was also kind of hoping to see ghost Hayden simply because that’s part of the arc, but I’m also holding out hope that this will feature somehow…)

Anyway – really glad they ARE trying to tie it together because so far the movies have seemed a tad disjointed to me. Maybe it’s just because the story’s not done yet, though.

I’m going to just let myself get on the hype train, dang it ;)  Rey’s lightsaber is freaking awesome, and I am so intrigued about what they will do with Palpatine. I really, really hope Rey doesn’t end up going dark as I hate seeing good characters go bad but I have to admit I’m pretty pumped for the movie, in spite of myself ;)

Juuuust enough of a tease! I don’t buy Rey turning to the Dark for a second. Force vision of a possible future or alternate path, maybe?

Anyway, looking forward to December

Meh. I’ll check it out on Disney+ most likely…

The only thing that remotely picked my interest in this trailer is the Y-wings. I wonder how the film will explain their absence in TLJ, if it even tries…

Also activating the lightsaber before folding it out looked really stupid at the end.

Instead of getting me hyped for the movie, this trailer only makes me excited about the upcoming TV shows.

A goodbye to the franchise?  I think the fans have already said their goodbyes.

Meh, the lightsaber seems a little too gimmicky even by Star Wars standards. But I guess I’ll watch it for Ian McDiarmid. Should be fun to see him ham it up one last time.

@11 You do not remotely speak for “the fans”.

Looked good to me. I’m looking forward to this one.

@12: The lightsaber is based on one we saw in the Clone Wars, so it has a legacy stretching back to George. (Of course it’s still fine to find it goofy, but there’s a tendency for critics to say “Disney doesn’t understand Star Wars!” when it’s actually George Lucas who doesn’t understand Star Wars. 😉)

@11: Some of “the fans” love the sequels, some hate them, as has been the case for every movie since 1980. I’ve been a fan since 1977 and you definitely don’t speak for me.

#15. Is that right? Well, I still find it goofy. The George era had a lot of goofy ideas, too.

cecrow

Hasn’t the Empire/First Order learned yet that star destroyers in tight formation is a bad idea?  Look at ESB’s collision, Rogue One’s tug boat slice-and-dice …  I sort of wondered, given the y-wings and whatnot, if this was a Battle of Jakku flashback scene. That could be relevant if they’re reviving the who-is-Rey’s-parents thing.

danielmclark

@16 Probably because it’s a movie about space wizards intended for children. Adult enjoyment it is a side effect, not the goal.

MaGnUs

Very hyped about this. Dark Rey is either a vision or she is possesed by Palpatine.

@9 – mcmordain: Why would they have to explain the Y-Wings’ absence? They were already old in the Rebellion era, they’re absolute antiques now, and they didn’t resort to them until the Resistance was almost done in.

@13 – danielmclark: Hear, hear.

#18. Sure, but there are degrees of goofiness in fantasy, and even kids too have the right to point at something and say that doesn’t look right to them. After all, what is Stars Wars without visual style and gimmicks? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t… from a certain point of view.

Products aimed at children can still be entertaining to adults.  But the lion’s share of Star Wars fans have always – going back to the original trilogy – been adults.  And even content designed to only be entertaining to children can be good or bad.  Excusing bad material because it’s “meant for kids” is an insult to children.

kellanved

If you really think the last movie in the new trilogy is the end of the franchise, then I don’t know what to tell you. Disney is going to milk SW movies until the heat death of the universe. It’s going to be great. Maybe we’ll even see some movies like Rogue One at some point.

How, exactly, is Star Wars aimed at children? I’m sure children understood all of the politics of the prequel trilogy *rolls eyes*

@21

Right, and also an insult to those of us who make art and entertainment for children. We’re not just throwing any old thing at the wall and calling it a day. We have to take a step back and judge whether something will work or not, just like any other artist.

melendwyr

It is often the case that genre is a marketing concept.  Not always, but often.  Various labels are also artifacts of marketing.  Some of the best books I’ve ever read have been “children’s books”.  I’d gladly hold them up in comparison with the ‘classics’, especially since many classic works became famous for raising the bar at the time they were written but have been left behind in terms of style and technique.

As Tolkien wrote in his famous essay “On Fairy-Stories”, children might not have the experience or the vocabulary to express why they find a work unsatisfying.  And to a degree their inexperience means that certain kinds of primitiveness in content can prove acceptable, while an adult whose tastes and standards have evolved might reject the same material.  But they can have surprisingly sophisticated perceptions of quality.  Trying to excuse the failings of an artistic work by saying it’s “for children” is… inexcusable.

@6 “My biggest complaint with the first trailer was that the music was kinda generic”

Generic? That was Leia’s Theme, a clear homage to Carrie Fisher. It couldn’t be less generic.

Lisamarie

@28 yeah, but it was a pretty clear re-use and they didn’t do a lot new with it aside from giving it some new flourishes and giving it some extra intensity, and then at about the midway it just kind of went into generic crescendo/choral mode that was cool, but not…extraordinary.  The other trailers for TFA/TLJ had some really interesting re-imagining of the existing themes, one of the TLJ trailers incorporated The Spark and some of them also had some additional new music. (Again, I don’t think John Williams is all that involved with these).

Leia’s theme is one of my favorite pieces, but for me this wasn’t as big of a twist on it to make it new and exciting for me.  I just remember for the trailers, I immediately went and downloaded music-only cuts of the trailers, and I still listen/watch them.  (Heck, I didn’t even really like TFA and I STILL love watching those trailers…that second TFA teaser flat out made me burst into tears when the Force theme started playing over the X-Wings, but that’s mainly because it’s the Force theme, lol) and this one didn’t totally do it for me, music wise.

For example the twist on Han Solo in the Princess in the TFA trailer leading into that extremely percussive Force theme take sent chills down my spine.  That intro to the TLJ teaser that weaved several different themes at key points, and then escalated into one of the most amazing re-imaginings of the Force theme I’ve ever heard (and that’s before its dark reprise) is still one of my favorite musical moments from all of the different trailers. The official TLJ trailer introduced The Spark (the best new piece from TLJ, imo) which blended with a much more intense version of The Jedi Steps (my favorite piece of anything in Williams’ repitoire from ANY movie) and a pretty good renditon of Kylo’s theme and again – it just got my heart pounding).

Nothing in that first Rise of Skywalker trailer really had any moments like that for me. It’s good music, because it’s Williams, but it didn’t stand out like some of those others did. That said, I have heard some fun analysis (likely crazy, but fun) that the ending flourish is a major key modulation of Kylo’s theme as some foreshadowing.

You write what works, that which tells a story and if it is all women or all men or a mix, then it is what it is.  Those you are talking about did not like “agenda modified” and the head of the Disney department took a hit for doing just that.

Rey dark side is clearly a vision similar to the one Luke had when he was training with Yoda.

Rey will fight her dark side mimicking Luke, while Luke saw himself in Vader’s armour, Rey fights something more akin to Kylo.

I’m looking forward to the movie but I’m apprehensive as well, please no more dumb bombing scenes…
