The show must, apparently, go on: Despite the pandemic and its effects on film and TV production, the Golden Globes are on this year—though a bit later than usual. The reliably argument-inducing awards announced their nominations this morning, and SFF makes a solid showing with The Mandalorian and Lovecraft Country both up for Best Drama.
It’s long been a complaint that major mainstream awards rarely take genre seriously. Game of Thrones was repeatedly nominated as Best Drama at the Golden Globes, but the show’s only win was Peter Dinklage’s Best Supporting Actor award in 2012. Mandalorian and Lovecraft are up against heavy-hitters The Crown, Ratched, and Ozark.
SFF films turn up in two other categories: The Midnight Sky, Soul, and Tenet are nominated for Best Original Score, and the Best Animated Feature Film nominations include Soul, Wolfwalkers, Over the Moon, and Onward.
Though their films aren’t SFF-adjacent, it’s worth noting that for the first time ever, more than one woman is nominated for Best Director: Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), and Regina King (One Night in Miami). You can see the full list of nominees here.
It’s not quite clear what this year’s award ceremony will look like, but Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are back to host. The ceremony airs on NBC on February 28th. If The Mandalorian wins, Baby Yoda had better be present to accept the award.
