Sure, we all loved Jodie Whittaker’s video introduction where she is still clearly wearing the Twelfth Doctor’s clothes, but revealing the new Doctor’s costume has always been a fun form of theatre that fans get to enjoy every time a new actor takes on the role. And now the Thirteenth Doctor’s wardrobe has been revealed! Prepare yourselves….
Take a peek:

Hell. Yes.
Okay, there’s a lot going on here, but this is so much fun. It’s exciting to have some more color reintroduced to the Doctor’s clothes (though never on par with The Rainbow Coat of Holding that the Sixth Doctor was fond of, as is only right). We’ve got a floaty gray duster combined with a hemmed wide-leg trouser that fits some excellent yellow suspenders–or braces, if you’re in the UK–along with a rainbow stripe on the shirt. Boots and socks complete the ensemble for something that looks whimsical and stylish at the same time.
There is a crazy 70s vibe going on here, as many have already noted. See, the musical Godspell:
And of course, everyone’s favorite sitcom alien before 3rd Rock From the Sun was even a glimmer in NBC’s eye:

By the way, for fans keeping track, her TARDIS looks a heckuva lot more like the TARDIS from the 70s and 80s era of the show, which really complements the costume.
So what does this mean for Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor? Will she be a bit more comedic, perhaps more jolly? Is she a free-wheeling kind of Time Lord, a bit more approachable than previous incarnations? Whatever this points to, one thing is for sure—this is gonna be so much fun to cosplay.
Looks perfectly doctorish.
I’m sure there will be some criticism arising. I mean, whimsical? Ok. True. Stylish? Not so much. Maybe if you’re still stuck in the 70s. But at least it’s not going to immediately open up the complaints that a leather catsuit would.
So there’s that. Still, I’d like it better without the color band and the yellow suspenders.
It is so funny that you posted the picture from Godspell; that was my first thought as well.
But I like the look; while it is more colorful than what we have seen from recent Doctors, it is a lot more dignified than some of the outfits from days gone by.
@1 MaGnUs – I agree. It looks completely out of place in exactly the right way.
@1, 4, My first thought was that it’s hideous. My second thought was that it probably suits its purpose.
Well it’s not an evil Mary Poppins look….
She’s an alien that’s over 4.5 billion years old, of course she’s gonna dress quirkily. At least is a sensible outfit for running around.
7, sensible outfit for running around with that coat? She’ll be stuck in a hedge the instant she tries to flee a Dalek.
Still No Hat!
Is it so hard to give me a Doctor who wears a hat? Come on!
I think it’s lovely. I’m not sure what I like best, the colourfulness, the quirkiness, or the lace-up boots.
She can shed the coat whenever she wants. I meant that she’s not wearing a skirt or something like that.
My first thought is that it’s trying hard to be quirky. Perhaps too hard.
@11 I’m picturing her doing an Obi-wan cloak drop at dramatic moments.
@@@@@9. Biter
The 11th doctor wore a fez.
@7, 11 If there’s one article of clothing the Doctor has been consistently fond of, it’s a long coat. Four, Five, Six, Ten, and Twelve had decidedly long coats. Three had his cloaks. Eleven had the green coat for a little bit, and then the purple one later. And all the others have been fond of jackets with a bit of length to them.
I don’t like it — there’s no unifying theme to the look. I hope this is just the initial costume, until the Doctor figures out how to deal with a female physique and which sections of the Wardrobe Room to raid. (I imagine the Doctor’s reaction, with shades of “Curse of Fatal Death”: “Still not ginger. Also, and this is new: bumps.”)
Four shades of blue? Bright blue socks, dark teal slacks, navy blue blouse, slightly-gray navy blue lining of the coat.
Two inches of bare ankle between the socks and slacks? That looks like a mistake. (“Oops. Bit more leg than I’m used to, what?”) With braces there’s no belt, obviously, but the transition between the slacks and blouse therefore looks odd.
The wide-open neckline of the blouse against the long coat also feels mismatched — two different kinds of weather? I’m accustomed to seeing the Doctor in a collar which, if nothing else, provides a lower boundary for a neck-length portrait on a book cover.
11,13, 15, it’s all about looking cool. I won’t be surprised if she ends up wearing sunglasses. At night.
14, don’t forget the Stetson.
@@@@@ 14, 17 cumulatively he only wears for about 20 minutes of screen time and the Stetson doesn’t even last a full minute. I want a full time hat.
The shortened trousers and the boots seem to evoke an ’80s bovver boy
Oh look, something to make Star Trek Discovery’s choices look positively inspired.
My first thought was Sarah Jane. A bit of a tribute to her style, too?
The big coat should be no more of a problem for her than it was for Ten, or for Jack Harkness. A big, billowy coat, when running, is a great visual, and it is not long enough to drag or be tripped on. And, of course, removable if necessary.
The cut of her trousers is interesting – flowing and skirt-like without being a skirt. I can’t see the heels of her boots – did they go for sensible soles for running, or are they expecting the Doctor to now run in heels?
Overall, feminine touches without being over-the-top feminine (e.g., Missy’s Mary Poppins look), what I’d expect from someone with centuries of being male looking for something they feel comfortable in at their first attempt being female.
Sigh… not billions of years old, a couple of thousand and change – 12 was only in that castle a few weeks each time before complete reset.
2017 trend of horrible cropped pants strikes again. :-( Everything else is cute.
@23 – Makhno: He has the memories.
My first thought was that the stripe is a nice homage to the 4th Doctor’s scarves, then thought that the size and positioning are rather unfortunate
WRT Hats: The 4th wore his floppy fedora well before Indiana Jones, and the 5th had a straw boater occasionally (I think—books aren’t handy)
My daughter is going to flip out over those suspenders. She loves wearing them and none of her friends think they look good.
Would it be sexist for the new female companion to give the thirteenth Doctor fashion counseling? Anybody else reminded of the crazy outfit Nyssa sported in ‘Snakedance’?
@28 Suspenders are cool.
Looks like something a 1,400ish year old man would think women’s fashion should be :)
Edited to clarify. what someone who’s lived 1,400ish years as a man thinks women’s fashion should be.
I like the coat and the divided skirt look. Suspenders are fine too. Not sure about that t-shirt.
24: The Fifth Doctor’s hat is more properly referred to as a Panama. Easy to roll up and stuff in a pocket when indoors.
Um I like the coat. The shirt is a bit Logan’s Run or a little Adric and, not a fan of the pants but, weirdly I am okay with the suspenders.
Kind of Mork meets Wesley Crusher with a big dash of Oh-My! thrown in. Veddy Nice Indeed; in ways that are confusing and fascinating.
@33: Yep. memory fail, should have made a quick trip to Wikipedia.

I like it. I would totally wear something like that if I had more money and was a little bit braver.
Anyone else noticed the change in the TARDIS itself? The sign is now black with white letters and the St. Jhon’s logo is gone.
38, well, I didn’t, but somebody did. I can’t quite say it means anything, nor really worry about it in an aesthetic sense, maybe it means nothing more than nobody cared.
