Martin Freeman (pictured above in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, who also starred in Sherlock, The Hobbit, and Black Panther) and Iain Armitage (the titular character in Young Sheldon) will be starring together in a new sci-fi film.

Deadline broke the news of their casting in The Adam Trials, which comes from writer-director Ben Ketai. Ketai’s previous credits include 2023’s River Wild, a reimagining of 1994’s The River Wild that I found out about researching for this post. (Is it just me, or is it wild that Hollywood did a remake of The River Wild, a fun film, to be sure, but not in my Top 100 list of something I’d pick to make a reboot of?)

The Adam Trials, according to Deadline, “tells the story of two parents who will do anything to save the life of their terminally ill son, employing experimental nanotechnology that starts to show signs of success but at a dark cost.”

Freeman will play the father, with Armitage playing the son who presumably gets kinda evil after being imbued with nanotechnology. Casting for the mother is currently underway.

“This movie has been a dream of mine for quite some time now, as has the opportunity to work with Martin again,” Ketai, who worked with Freeman on StartUp, said in a statement. “Now with Iain’s talent in the mix, I am counting the seconds until we start rolling.”

Denis O’Sullivan, head of Compelling Pictures, the movie’s production company, added: “As lifelong fans of thought-provoking, grounded sci-fi, it’s thrilling to be part of bringing this pressure-cooker of a movie to the screen with the enormously talented Ben Ketai. Audiences will be on the edge of their seats watching the cat-and-mouse game that unfolds between Martin and Iain as the story hurtles towards a stunning final twist.”

No news yet on when The Adam Trials will go into production or make its way to theaters. icon-paragraph-end
