Noel Fielding as Dick Turpin

While the cancellation of Our Flag Means Death still hurts, it looks like there’s another irreverent historical comedy coming our way that seems to channel not only some OFMD vibes, but evokes some Monty Python sensibilities as well.

That’s the sense we get, at least, with The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin trailer Apple TV+ released during their Television Critics Association panel today. The series stars Noel Fielding as the titular Turpin, a bon vivant from the 18th century who becomes a highwayman with arguable stealing skills but a definite fashion sense.

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

In The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, Dick Turpin (Fielding) sets out on a journey of wildly absurd escapades when he’s made the reluctant leader of a band of outlaws—and tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman and self-appointed thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville). In this irreverent retelling set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of lovable rogues, Turpin rides the highs and lows of his new endeavors, including a brush with celebrity, all whilst trying to escape the clutches of the thief-taker.

The show is created by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis and Stuart Lane, and written by Jon Brittain, Richard Naylor, Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis and Stuart Lane, with Noel Fielding. The first two episodes of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin premieres on Apple TV+ on March 1, 2024. The following four episodes will drop weekly every Friday through March 29.
