While we have a little ways to go before the second season of Netflix’s The Witcher debuts, the streaming service has something to tide fans of the fantasy series over—an anime film called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which is set to premiere on August 23rd.
Netflix has released a new teaser for the project, showing off a new Witcher as he deals with some demons and skeptical villagers.
Netflix announced the project more than a year ago after season one premiered, with series showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and writer Beau de Mayo working on it. Last month, we got a teaser/date announcement for the film, which showed off a bit of what to expect: a Witcher heading off a demonic invasion of a kingdom.
The Witcher in question is Vesemir (voiced by Kim Bodnia), a mentor of Geralt in the live-action series. In this new trailer, we get a glimpse of what’s in store: plenty of action from the roguish Vesemir, who’s been making good money working as a monster hunter, enlisted by a woman to help protect her home from an army of demonic creatures.
Netflix has increasingly been leaning into anime as a way to build up its library of original content, and has branched into anime spinoffs of other films and shows, like Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon. It seems like that strategy is an easy way to help build out a franchise, and to keep fans happy while they wait for the next big season.
The film is set to debut on Netflix on August 23rd. Season two of The Witcher will bow on December 17th.
