The latest installment in the $2 billion-grossing Conjuring franchise is almost here, and while it doesn’t star Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, The Nun II does see the return of the demon who takes the form of a woman of the cloth who, in the recently released trailer at least, terrorizes everyone she comes in contact with.

Here’s the movie’s logline:

1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.

Valak’s back, baby! And based on the trailer, it looks like she’s taken up a hobby of possessing magazines in a newsstand, if only to continue to terrorize the formidable Sister Irene, played once again by Taissa Farmiga.

Farmiga is joined in The Nun II by Jonas Bloquet (The Nun), Storm Reid (The Last of Us, The Suicide Squad), Anna Popplewell (Fairytale, The Chronicles of Narnia) and Bonnie Aarons (reprising her role as the titular demon nun).

Michael Chaves—who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the third Conjuring film starring Wilson and Vera Farmiga as supernatural sleuths the Warrens—directs this film as well. The screenplay comes from Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing (Eli, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and Akela Cooper (M3GAN, Malignant), with a story by Cooper, based on characters created by James Wan & Gary Dauberman.

The film scares its way into theaters on September 8, 2023.
