The news last week that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would get a fifth and sadly final season was bittersweet for many fans. Yes, it was good to know that we still have three seasons to look forward to, but it’s also a bummer to know that the series will be ending after season five, which has only has a paltry six episodes to boot.

The decision for the show to end after season five appears not to have come from the creative team, which co-showrunners and executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers confirmed in a recent interview with /Film. During that discussion, they shared that the ones who decide whether a show has “[worn] out its welcome” are the execs who pay for it.

The two also shared, however, that they had hopes we may see at least some of the cast beyond Strange New Worlds’ final episode. “My focus is singular,” said Myers. “I’m Strange New Worlds all the time. But would I like to get us right up to the edge of [The Original Series] and then have somebody call us and say, ‘Now make that show!’”

Goldsman added, “We literally have a fantastic cast and we have incredible sets and we have all these things right there—it’s a shame to waste it.”

The idea of a remake (or bookends? adventures we missed the first time?) of The Original Series is an intriguing one, and also perhaps not a surprising one given we live in an era of reboots and remakes. Anything that gives us more of this cast is something I’d love to see, though ideally that would be in a couple more seasons of Strange New Worlds.

Speaking of Strange New Worlds, the third season of the show premieres on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+. I’ve watched some of those episodes already, and I can say that fans of the show are, once again, in for a treat. icon-paragraph-end
