With just two weeks to go until the premiere date, Netflix has released a full trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the standalone anime movie spinoff from The Witcher. The film follows Vesemir (voiced by Theo James), eventual mentor to The Witcher protagonist Geralt, as he faces two threats: monsters on one hand, skeptical and angry humans on the other.
Brotherhood of the Wolf comes from the team behind The Witcher, including showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and writer Beau de Mayo, and the animation company Studio Mir. It’s directed by Kwang Il Han (an animation director on The Legend of Korra). The movie was announced in January 2020, and now neatly fills the space between the first and upcoming second seasons of the main show.
The movie’s trailer hints at what’s involved with creating a Witcher—or at least what a couple of scared, future-Witcher kids think happens. But mostly it focuses on a very confident adult Vesemir, who scoffs at those who think he ought to do his job for something other than coin. When a woman hires him to kill the monsters in the woods outside a town, he winds up teamed with a witch—and then facing a whole different threat when humans begin to suspect the Witcher’s motives.
Netflix also shared a poster in which Vesemir looks a bit more pensive than he seems in the trailer.
