Throne of Glass TV adaptation Hulu Sarah J. Maas Kira Snyder

Once someone finally claims the Iron Throne on Game of Thrones, get ready for a throne of a different material: Hulu is developing the epic fantasy television series Queen of Shadows, based on Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series (and named for the fourth installment). Kira Snyder—writer/producer on The 100 and now for Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale—will write the pilot, in which assassin Celaena Sardothien must fight 23 challengers to win her freedom… to be the champion of a tyrannical king. Anna Foerster (OutlanderUnderworld: Blood Wars) is set to direct the potential pilot.

Here’s the summary for Throne of Glass, the first book:

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king’s champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

The fifth installment, Empire of Storms, was published earlier this month. There will be six books in the Throne of Glass series—seven if you include The Assassin’s Blade, a collection of prequel novellas—so Hulu will have plenty of material if the series gets picked up.
