Lin-Manuel Miranda Producing Film and TV Adaptations of Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle

Remember when Patrick Rothfuss stopped by Hamilton earlier this year and Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that The Name of the Wind inspired “The Story of Tonight”? Turns out that the two will not just be influenced by one another but actual collaborators: The Wrap reports that Miranda will serve as creative producer behind Lionsgate’s planned film and television (and other media) adaptations of Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle.

Lionsgate acquired the rights to Rothfuss’ series a little over a year ago but announced Miranda’s role today. Erik Feig, Co-President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement:

The best way to service Pat Rothfuss’ unique and ambitious view was to invent a new way of adapting it with Lionsgate’s film and television teams working side-by-side, which meant that only a multi-hyphenate talent like Lin-Manuel Miranda could do the job. Lin is an incomparable talent and a huge fan of the trilogy and, working closely with Pat, his creative oversight of the franchise will bring an incredible level of detail and continuity to all of the projects.

Why Hamilton is the Perfect Mashup for Every Fandom

The Hamilton creator and former star tweeted his excitement:

Miranda also told Variety,

Pat Rothfuss’ Kingkiller books are among the most read and re-read in our home. It’s a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of making music more beautifully than any novelist I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to play a part in bringing this world to life onscreen.

Rothfuss’ response on Twitter:

Lionsgate’s deal will allow it to develop various stories from The Name of the WindThe Wise Man’s Fear, and various novellas (including The Slow Regard of Silent Things) simultaneously and across multiple platforms, including video games. According to Variety, Miranda is expected to compose original music and song for the movie(s) and TV series; he also has the option to be involved in future stage productions.

This is great, but I still think that LMM should play Arliden.

I’m still a bit nervous about the whole movie+TV thing. Marvel only works because the TV shows are all separate stories with their own plots and arcs and don’t inform the movies significantly. With NOTW, a movie could only be a 2 hour pilot that is finished by a TV series (in which case, what’s the point of it being in theaters at all?), or it could be a series of movies covering the books and spin-off TV series for non-book stuff? Neither option seems very good, imho.

But, at least this guy seems to know his stuff (understatement).

Maybe there is hope for it yet.

Getting hard to contain my excitement about these projects

KKC seems like it would be incredibly hard to translate to film/tv, but they are putting it in great hands

I can’t handle this much joy :)

IF Lionsgate lets this happen the way we all hope…. this is going to be EPIC.

I’d take book 3 before a movie/tv series. Just sayin’.

Glad to see Rothfuss doing something with his work. Too bad his perfectionism will never allow him to release the last book. I’m sure the TV adaptation will fill that void.

Underwhelmed.  Where is the final book?

I’ll have to join the other voices that are still clamoring for Book 3.

A TV series would be awesome, but not until we KNOW the end of the story!

I have to agree with everyone’s trepidation. In my humble opinion, everything would be cheapened again (e.g. Game of Thrones) if the films progress faster than the book. Book 3 first, please.

Well if the two books are made into a series, wouldn’t that mean we get book three in at least the next four years ?  At freaking last.

Yea this is potentially good news.  Lots of great fantasy adapts awesome to the big screen – game of thrones, lord of the Rings… ummm maybe just a few are adapted well.  Hope this gets the treatment it deserves.

As for book 3 vs. work on this, well yes I would rather have book three.  But Pat’s time doesn’t belong to me, and as the show progresses perhaps it will help book three come out, as it appears game of thrones series has helped Martin’s next book get done.  Perhaps working on the show will shake loose some details in Pat’s creativity and the way will open.  I can hope anyway.

A little progress tweet on Doors of Stone would sure be appreciated though.

I’d be excited if I had hope that this series would ever be finished

Please tell me that the series will be finished as a book and not parrot the GRRM idea of finishing a literary series with a movie/television series?????  I still am neither happy nor satisfied that the series which began many years ago has been turned into a sideshow, an unending sideshow.  If this is going to be the new normal for literature I may as well stop buying books because it is not worth my investment of time and thought when I can simply wait and the once great story will be on public display through the 42″ peephole into paradise.

And Gutenberg put how many years of his life into the ability to have books?

Please for love of god just publish the book…. Get on with it and finish it and PUBLISH it.

It seems Pat Rothfuss likes doing anything  except writing. George R R Martine, even Scot Lynch, but at least he has proper reason for delay.

I know Rothfuss is great for charity etc but plz, all that exists because people like his story …. Or he would be exiled now because of that beard alone.

I know i am being very harsh but Pat can give lessons to gearge r r martin for “dead line… What deadline!” I know he is not my female doggie but he said it was done years ago and that’s why many people bought the first book, now it will never be done and even Brandon Sanderson is too busy to finish this.

It is fine if an author needs a few extra years to write an decent book but some just don’t care and no one is even allowed to raise the subject when they are walking about like they have cured cancer and viruses as well as discovering faster than light travel, when actually they have mid led people about there work… Don’t start a series  if you can’t end it…. Dear me I sound like a proper …..!

Awesome! Can’t wait BUT…. Until Doors of Stone is released, its not a trilogy, or if it is, it’s a trilogy in two parts. Please please please finish and release Doors of Stone! My hubby bought Name of the Wind on a whim in 2011 and Wise Mans Fear a month later, but its nearly 6 years later and we’re still waiting :( :( :( Please  (pretty please) with a cherry and chocolate sprinkles!!?!?!

Man I just don’t want the pictures I have in my head to be changed so whenever the next book comes out I have to imagine some actor. Book 3 should definetely come before a movie.
