Whaaaaaaaaat YES.
In a sudden announcement from the BBC, it would seem that Michelle Gomez is not the only incarnation of the Master returning for the upcoming season.
A rumor was released recently from the Sun speculating on John Simm’s return to Doctor Who, which was later confirmed by the BBC: Simm will be playing the Master in the upcoming season of the show alongside Michelle Gomez’s Missy and Peter Capaldi’s Doctor.
Steven Moffat gave his confirmation as well with a few words:
“Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”
‘Solo personality clash’ seems to indicate that Missy and the Master will not be getting along, which is liable to cause any number of shenanigans. There is precedence in the show for multiple incarnations of the same Time Lord not getting along; the Doctor has argued amongst himself quite frequently in the multi-Doctor episodes of yesteryear.
This is sure to be an interesting shake-up in the world of Who, and marks Simm’s first appearance on the show since 2010. In the words of Harold Saxon–rejoice!
Actually, best not, since it’s probably going to be a little… murdery.
