Star Wars’ Cassian Andor spy thriller isn’t the only new television series The Walt Disney Company is developing! Yesterday’s announcement about streaming service Disney+ also revealed that a Loki TV series is in the works, with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the god of mischief on the small screen.
Standalone series for both Loki and Scarlet Witch were teased a few months ago, but now it looks as if Disney is committing to at least the former. The news came as part of a larger announcement from the Company about Disney+ and plans for initial offerings:
Disney+ is also assembling a live-action series centered around a fan-favorite character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iger today confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing a series based on Loki, the god of mischief, to star Tom Hiddleston.
As The Mary Sue points out, it’s unclear where or (more importantly) when a Loki series would take place, as his current status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is tragically, unfairly dead following the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War. Then again, Loki has come back from the dead many a time. Perhaps, as in the case of the Cassian Andor series, this is a prequel… or even an alternate universe series? We’re just happy to have more Loki in our lives.
Hiddleston returned to Twitter after over a year’s absence to share this response to the news:
