Variety reports that Jeremy Renner is the latest Avenger in talks to lead his own standalone television series on the Disney+ streaming service. If the deal goes through, Renner would continue playing Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye on a limited series sometime after the events of Avengers: Endgame. But wait! Before you go rolling your eyes about the choice of who does and doesn’t get a solo series, here’s an interesting detail that wasn’t in the Variety headline: Rumor has it the series is about Clint passing on the torch, er, bow to other Hawkeye Kate Bishop!

With the caveats that the reps for Marvel, Disney, and Renner himself all gave the no-comment, Variety describes what sources say the series will be about:

The project is said to be an adventure series in which Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, will pass the torch to Kate Bishop. Bishop is a Marvel Comics character who took up the Hawkeye mantle after Barton. She is also a member of the group known as the Young Avengers.

This would match up nicely with the final trailer for Avengers: Endgame, which featured Clint having a moment of parental (figure?) pride with a young woman who could be Kate, or could be his daughter. We’re hoping for the former, as we would love to see Kate and other Young Avengers step forward after the various departures of the OG Avengers at the conclusion of Endgame. That’d be a hell of a way to kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That said, The Daily Dot’s Gavia Baker-Whitlaw makes a good point that the MCU’s Clint and Kate would be very different from the Hawkeyes we came to know and love in Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye series:

We’ll see how Renner’s Hawkeye comes out of Avengers: Endgame, considering that he seems to start the film in a dark place as Ronin. The movie comes to theaters April 26, and you can pre-register for Disney+ here.
