Plenty of the projects Disney announced during yesterday’s Investor Day presentation were expected. But it’s pretty safe to say that the Buzz Lightyear origin story was… not. But here we are: Get ready for Chris Evans voicing the backstory of everyone’s favorite plastic space cop!
Originally voiced by Tim Allen, Buzz Lightyear first appeared in Toy Story all the way back in 1995, and previously got his own standalone tale in 2000’s straight-to-video Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins. Patrick Warburton gave Buzz life in the animated series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which managed to have a stunning 65 episodes despite running for about six months.
Lightyear will introduce us to a younger Buzz, a test pilot who has not yet become a famed Space Ranger. But Chris Evans would like you to know that this is not the story of the Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. I’ll let him explain:

Got that? Everybody clear now? We’re getting a movie about the fictional human on whom a fictional toy within a fictional universe is based. Also, there will definitely be toys made of the fictional human who already inspired a whole store’s worth of toys.
Anyway, the point is, everything from the ’90s is new again, except that now we have Captain America instead of the dad from Home Improvement. This will all presumably make sense when Lightyear touches down in theaters on June 17, 2022.
